The village from "Local Hero" faces landslide trouble

Pennan, Aberdeenshire, is in danger of being cut off from the rest of the world due to the discovery of a large crack in a cliff-side which, if shattered, would close off the only access road leading out of the village with arguably the most famous red phone box in Britain:

Residents of the Aberdeenshire village of Pennan could have to leave their homes while a section of cliff threatening to collapse is repaired.

Engineers have been assessing the 25m crack above the village's only access road, after heavy rain.

The residents would have to leave by Friday before the road is fully closed to allow the work.

The village, made famous by the classic film Local Hero, suffered severe mudslides in 2007.

The road has been closed to the general public, and the repair work from this weekend could last a week.

On the other hand, the villagers have recently decided to stick it out while the work progresses:

Several residents in the village made famous by the film Local Hero are expected to stay while work to prevent a possible landslide is carried out.

A total of 22 people will be asked if they want to leave their homes in Pennan while the section of cliff threatening to collapse is removed.

Work could begin at the weekend, and would restrict access.

The new Pennan Inn owner Peter Simpson said he would not move, and some others are expected to do the same.

Here's hoping the stormy weather that is currently battering parts of Britain doesn't interfere with things.
