The USS Kelvin

It's a Badass Class starship. Captain Robau built her himself.

With his own two hands, in the rain, with Kirk's parents nagging him constantly with "Is it done yet?".

Anyhoo seriously we will probably never know, unless Abrams feels like having the full name, registry and class appear in the background on a display just for the fans so that the non-trekkie audience doesn't really notice.

Im sure they will have come up with a name for it, and even if it doesnt appear in the film dialogue it will likely be in an attached book, be it the novel and/or behind the scenes publications.

That way the fans can bicker for years to come about what is really the class name saying it isnt canon as it wasnt said on screen like the Miranda and Akira class ships.

I think Kelvin Class describes it well for the time being, with it being a ship within the Class that the Kelvin belongs to.

When do you suppose we might get a peak inside her, a follow up trailer closer to release, publicity stills over the next weeks and months or will we have to wait untill we are sat in the cinema? Actually I cant believe that for me personally the biggest buzz at the moment for the film is for a ship which will probably be on screen for about 10 minutes (if that) unless there are more of the same shown class later (which Im hoping there will be)

Guess its the not knowing factor for you, you always want what you cant have...and I want Kelvin set pictures lol

I hate that registry.

Well, yeah.. but if you know you're gonna build more than 1000 of somehting, the leading zero assures that you're not missing a trailing digit that's substantial.

Plus, don't forget the NX-class ships of a century earlier on ENTERPRISE. The ones we saw launched and in service before the show was cancelled all had zeros preceding the numerical order that they came out of drydock. NX-01...NX-02. And so forth.

You know, reading over this thread, I've got an idea for a scene that should be in the movie to explain the zero in the registry.

Exterior Kelvin hull. Workers are welding the ship together, similar to the Enterprise being welded in the trailer. Among the welders is a main painting on the hull. He has already painted NCC and is finishing the dash. At this moment, badass techno-disco music plays as the Badass Captain Robau struts out onto the hull. His uniform shirt is open half-way down his chest, because he is badass.

Robau: "I want this ship to have a four digit registry."
Painter: "I'm sorry sir, that's not possible. The ship's registry is NCC-514. That's only a three-digit number."
Robau: "Then put a zero in front of the registry."
Painter: "Sir?"
Robau: "Make the registry NCC-0514."
Painter: "I don't think I can do-"
Robau: "I am the Badass Captain Robau! If I want a four digit registry for my ship, then I will have a four-digit registry for my ship. Now paint me a zero."

Sighing, the painter paints 0514 until the hull.

Robau: "Badass."

Badass techno-disco music plays as Robau struts away.

Yeah... That ZERO and the Trans-mutated Beagle that Scotty got (gets?) in trouble for will probably be the only referances to ENTERPRISE in the whole movie.

It may have been discussed, but I am curious as to what class the Kelvin might be. Ideas anyone? Or is it possibly a new class?

Cruiser I should think, either cruiser or a heavy cruiser, can't be a destroyer, its almost the same size as Constitution class, if not larger. :bolian:

On the vein of my earlier "theory", I now declare this a Destroyer Leader modification of the standard Saladin Destroyer. The added sensor dish and support craft facilities lend new C3I and logistics functionality to this vessel, while reducing impulse maneuverability and perhaps justifying a removal of the main offensive armament of torpedo tubes and substitution of self-defense plasma peashooters.

Of course, it's a failed modification, as Destroyer Leaders (vessels approaching Light Cruiser size) tended to be in WWII. So it quickly gets relegated to Observation duties instead.
