The upcoming Apple tablet looks like a giant iPod Touch...

Er... that's just a fanmade mockup. If Apple is indeed working on a tablet (which is likely) they haven't released any concrete information on it at all, certainly not any photos!

It is a neat concept though, makes me think of a Star Trek PADD

I see a real world price tag of 700 to 1000 USD. Based on rumors on the net. Apple wants a piece of the netbook world.

I thought mapple made its money on expensive hardware?

I think they do. The new shuffle with the talking system has 80 dollar head phones instead of the normal 30 dollar OEM set. The new version has two cents worth of electronics.

I love that. Apple wants a piece of the $300 netbook world and they'll probably sell them for more than the price of a pc laptop.

But it will be shiny and smooth and have a glass screen. It might even let you copy and paste. :p

A improved version of a concept Apple built years before the iPhone. Has everyone forgotten the Apple Newton?

Kind of hard to forget what you still use... and I still use my Newton 120 today. :techman:

As for the tablet idea, Apple was heading down that path with the Newton line but decided against going further with it (but went forward with the eMate instead).

I read the article but I disagree with the author, this better not be run on iPhoneOS. I don't think it's designed for that kind of device.

His design is sexy though. Have a perfect voice recognition and it won't even need a keyboard.

To be fair, iPhone OS and OS X are just branches of the same OS, so it wouldn't be a stretch to see Apple commit to a third branch that was optimised for a small tablet screen experience.

As for grabbing a share of the netbook market, I don't think Apple gives two shits about it. The margins are razor-thin and the various OEM's are rushing to the bottom while Apple sells premium hardware with insane margins and rakes in the cash. Take the smartphone market as a 'for instance:' The iPhone represents something like 2 or 3 percent of mobile phone sales, but it accounts for almost a quarter of the profit generated in the mobile space.

That's insane, and exactly where Apple wants to be. Moreover, Apple holds a commanding share of the over $1000 notebook market, which means that when a consumer has the cash, Apple is where they go to spend it. If Apple does come out with a tablet, it's going to serve a different function than a futile attempt to grab market share in the bargain basement of the computer industry.

Is this device going to incorporate that memory aid technology IBM is incorporating?

If so that could pose a very serious privacy issue... (if you want to know why, and you should -- just look back a couple of pages, you'll find a post of mine on this)
