No more RBN on Wii:

Next Tuesday, 1/18/2010, will also be the last scheduled batch of Rock Band Network songs brought over to the Wii. With the smaller online install base, limited demand for releases so far and the significant amount of work it takes for our producers and audio team to convert and process these additional tracks we’re no longer able to continue submitting RBN content to the Wii. Regular Wii DLC, and RBN releases for the 360 and PS3 will continue uninterrupted.

No Rock Band packs next week because they're releasing a Valentine's Day pack this Friday:

• Animotion – “Obsession”
• B.o.B. (featuring Hayley Williams) – “Airplanes”
• Bonnie Tyler – “Total Eclipse of the Heart
• The Human League – “Don’t You Want Me”
• Lady Antebellum – “Need You Now”
• Meat Loaf – “Paradise by the Dashboard Light”
• Stevie Nicks – “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”

On a side note, Activision is pulling the plug on Guitar Hero. Turns out flooding the market with the exact same game wasn't such a good idea.

Oooh - not according to Activision. They're trying to pull Rock Band down at the same time by claiming that "continued declines in the music genre" contributed to their decision to cancel Guitar Hero.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/02/09/guitar.hero.gone/index.html

Uh, what? I know a disappointing number of people are interested in temporary downloads and that's killing permanent media, but if anything I thought people were turning to games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band to get their music fix. Weird to see Activision not just say "our game stiffed". Obviously Rock Band seems to be doing OK from what I see here.

Of course they're trying to take Rock Band down with them and not admit to their own culpability. They're Activision.

Here's a quote from a CNET story that I'm sure Activision won't acknowledge:

"It doesn't surprise me," said Amanda Caparoon, a Seattle bartender and music gaming fan, when told Activision was burying the brand. "There's cooler stuff now, like Rock Band. And dance-based games are where it's at now."

Dance based games? Hah. Konami must hate that.

The genre as a whole is dying in America - given that MTV Games is now gone and Harmonix is basically burdened with the debt associated with making games since Rock Band 2 (they also recently laid off 120 people).

Downloads for the week of Feb. 20:

Pat Benatar Pack
• “Fire and Ice”
• “Love is a Battlefield”
• “Shadows of the Night”
• “We Belong”
• “Invincible”
• “Promises in the Dark”

Did that guy seriously call "I Wanna be Sedated" one of the hardest songs in the game? :)

Well now, what a suprise:

Days of Peace Pack 01

• Blood, Sweat & Tears – “Spinning Wheel”
• Santana – “Black Magic Woman” X

Singles
DragonForce – “Through the Fire and Flames” X
• DragonForce – “Operation Ground and Pound”

Through the Fire and Flames Pro Guitar on expert is instapurchase for the lol factor. For good ol' five button guitar I hope they kept the intro more or less the same as GH3 for the tapping factor. I wonder if I can pull it off on the RB3 engine. I remember people arguing whether it was guitar or keyboard anyway. Speaking of which, should be a great keyboard song. I need to actually learn how to play the damned thing. I've put very little time into RB3, mostly because it feels off with the lag calibration whereas RB2 felt spot on.

Oh that'll be real fun at parties when everyone's just a bit drunk... "Guys, I double dog dare you to try THIS ONE, muahahahahah"...
