The Undiscovered Country Engine Room

...And then we can start figuring out how to put the sets together into one integrated Main Engineering, with minimal changes (and so that changes within a single episode, such as the wrench table appearing in "Court Martial", can be accommodated). ;)

I thought that was obvious - Finney messed with the visual playback records... again ;)

What the hell's wrong with the wrench?

Y'know, not every hand tool has to be some high tech gizmo.

Of course not. It's a Space Wrench ... of The Future !!!

The real question is - where are all the nuts and bolts that need such a large adjuastable spanner? I never saw any ;)

But that's just the problem: this high tech wrench is apparently equipped with a transporter so that it can appear out of nowhere between shots...

The only way to "solve" that problem, I guess, is to assume that the engineering spaces of the TOS ship consist of multiple near-identical parallel "boiler rooms" and the fight between Kirk and Finney ebbed and flowed between those rooms. Which would help with other things, too.

Or then the two fighters accidentally hit a switch that caused a tool stand to emerge from the floor. It would make sense for such things to be available at Main Engineering...

The answer is simple; Smart Spanners. Unlike these days, when you can never find the right tool for the job, by the 23rd Century all tools have a limited AI built into them, so they know exactly when to turn up.

Or there was a interspatial tear in the engine room that was caused by the ferociousness of the fight. Each blow landed on the opponent was so strong it literally knocked them temporarily into another similar universe. You could tell when that happened when Kirk or Finney didn't look like Kirk or Finney anymore :D Finney got lucky when he got knocked into one with a spanner placed in the corner and brought it back with him into the fight.

:D :D :D

Sure - when Kirk first enters the engine room, that corner did not have the stand with the wrench. We never see that corner again until after Kirk and Finney are wrestling on the control panels and then Kirk punches Finney near to that corner. You can catch a glimpse of the wrench+stand in that corner and it stays there on any subsequent shots where that corner is visible and when Finney grabs the wrench.

Now after seeing it again - it is entirely possible that there is a stand that can slide out/rotate out/rise up out of that corner after some buttons were inadvertently pushed in the opening parts of the fight. There were no random appear/disappear happenings as far as I can tell :)
