The Ultimate Everything Uniform Thread (Spoilers)

So, we've seen it... what does everyone think of the uniforms?

1) TOS-analog: In wide shots they are fine, but close in the woven delta-shield pattern is just too comic-book for my tastes. I don't mind the silver rank braid as much as I thought I would, and I actually do like the insignia.

2) The Academy Admirals: What on earth were those things? In the final Academy scene, I saw a bunch of folks in them holding caps under their left arms, but i saw no rank insignia or emblems of any kind on these uniforms. They looked like some futuristic shag carpet. I didn't care for them at all.

3) Cadet Uniforms: Liked them, though I would have preferred the delta on the chest and an indicator of time in the academy on the collar (ala TNG).

4) Academy Officer Uniforms: The gray ones. Really liked these. I think they are my favorites in the movie.

5) USS Kelvin uniforms: Liked them better than I expected, particularlly the belt and pants. The shirt I could take or leave, but I can see them as a plausable transition from Enterprise to the nuTOS.

What are your thoughts?

I really liked the Kelvin (early 23rd century uniforms). They are definitely an Enterprise to TOS transition.

Did you notice that Pike's admiral uniform at the end was almost identical to the uniform that Admiral Kirk wears at the beginning of Star Trek: the Motion Picture?

Similarly the nurses uniforms on the Enterprise seemed to be a bit in the vein of the medical staff uniforms in TMP.

I definitely did not expect to see a TMP uniform shout out in the film, but they certainly picked two of the better uniforms from that movie to emulate.

I really liked the TMP Admiral's uniform PIke was wearing at the end. First time those pajamas have ever looked so good.

Egad, you are right... how could I have forgotten...

I actually was disappointed by that particular choice. I didn't care for the goofy look of it. I actually thought it looked like pajamas even worse than the TMP ones - especially the overstuffed neck!

Funny - I just started a thread close to this, where I mention that the new unis remind me of the uniforms worn by Shatner and Nimoy in the pre-Corbomite Maneuver promo stills (where they're holding flashlights with Grace Lee Whitney and all).

They have the same style: smaller insignia, collar style and braid style.

I thought the main uniforms still had too much primary colors in them. (Target! Target! Big bullseye, shoot right there!)

However, the cadet uniforms were fine. It's not a problem if they're a target, they're cadets anyway. :D

Yeah, I really liked all of the uniforms. Anyone know if replicas are being produced yet?

I just got an email from an online costume house, and they have them in stock now.

I don't know if they both have the "weave" to them, but they have deluxe style and standard available, top and the collar dickie.

(why do I grin slightly every time I have to type that last word?)

I've seen the replicas over at Forbidden Planet. Haven' made my mind up on them yet, they don't look great.

In the film though - loved the uniforms, though it took me a while to get used to all the colour again.

The uniforms remained to true to the original, but weren't distracting. I think that was the intention, and they pulled it off well.

I loved all the uniforms. And I got a real kick out of Pike's admiral's outfit, which looks very much like Kirk's in ST:TMP.

And I approve of bright primary colors on Star Trek uniforms the same way I approve of Superman's red cape.

I liked most of them. Having a service uniform for ground personnel and a more comfortable shipboard working uniform was very realistic. That being said, I didn't like the Admiral uniforms. They looked like either judges or they just pulled away from a full dress Cinco de Mayo party. They did not look like flag officers.

I liked all the uniforms. I did feel a bit of an overload of that crimson color during the scenes where there were tons of cadets though.

The shipboard uniforms are sweet though. I love the primary colors. I love the silver stripe. To anybody who said the primary colored uniforms would look stupid in 2009 I say phooey.

It's really amazing that for thirty years every director and every costumer to work on these movies said in turn, more or less, that big swatches of primary colors wouldn't work as movie costuming for Trek. Then these folks just come along and do it and it works great.

The uniforms are probably the only thing about this movie I have no problem with. It's nice that they stuck with the bold colors.
