2016 was not the first year that both a Star Trek and Star Wars film were released in theaters. But in 2002, Star Trek gave us a sequel, whereas Star Wars gave us a prequel; last year, both entries were prequels (more or less), and both were more action-packed than usual installments in which madmen attempted to blow up cities, and old faces turned up for cameos. Also, both were scored by the same composer, and... okay, enough talk. Time to vote.

Myself, as a lifelong Trekker, I take no pleasure whatsoever in saying that I freaking hated Star Trek Beyond. Its story felt like that of a Sega Genesis product, the script reduced the fine cast into playing parodies of caricatures, the action was deafening and incomprehensible, the villain made Nero seem complex, and the only two moments I liked at all were the handling of Spock's passing and the glimpse of the classic crew.

Rogue One, on the other hand, was the first time I on balance liked a Star Wars movie released after my birth. (No, not at all a Force Awakens fan, though I do find AOTC endearing in its awfulness.) It's far from a great flick; its characters are thin and the plot is undercooked, and if it weren't part of a beloved franchise we all know and love I doubt many of us would have liked it nearly as much. Still, I liked the cast and what character work we got, the action looked great, and I wasn't miserable while in the theater, even though the auditorium wasn't as well-heated or home to as comfortable seats as the place I saw Beyond. Also, bonus points for keeping "A Star Wars Story" out of the title screen.

In short: my vote goes to Rogue One. I wish I could join the consensus that Beyond was a fun, cheery adventure, but I never want to see that movie and its stupid animated subtitles again.

As much as I like Rogue One, I have to go with Beyond. Not only is it the first reboot movie that I really liked, it instantly became a Top 3 Star Trek movie. It has better characters/character moments, the story is good and its just a fun movie that also made me care about a group of characters in a way I didn't think I could after the first two movies. Jaylah got more development and was a more interesting new character then any of the RO characters (although I did like them, outside of Jyn we didn't get much about them). The main cast were likeable characters that I enjoyed and we got to finally see McCoy actually do something besides be a glorified extra. I suppose Beyond's villain was weaker, but he worked for the story they were teling.

That said, I still really, really liked Rogue One. But, when it comes down to it, Beyond wins with better characters and a better story. Still, they're both great additions to their franchises and having them both come out in 2016 is one of the few positive things about that year.

Beyond could have been better in some ways, but as it stands I had no serious problems with it. On that alone, I vote Star Trek Beyond. Rogue One finishes very strong, but the first half has some pretty bad pacing problems, and the story does feel a little like the patch-work that it is in some places.

But in my eyes there's no real loser here. Either one winning this poll is cool.

I enjoyed both films, even though I had issues with both. I ended up voting for Beyond because I enjoyed the character moments a bit better and I felt over all the story flowed well. My biggest issue with Rogue One was the story felt chop up into clear acts. Act 1 focusing on building the D&D party as it were, then Act 3 seeming to require a heroic death for every member of the party, it felt very structured which took me out of the story.
I'll own both movies I'm sure, enough to love in each of them.

I feel your pain. And, yet, I found Beyond to be the best of the NuTrek and closest to the original. Well, until the end.

I realize that many did not like "Star Trek Beyond", but I did. I thought it was better than the two movies directed by J.J. Abrams.

But . . . between that film and "Rogue One", I would choose the latter as the better movie.

I think if you put a little of Beyond's brightness into Rogue One and took some of its tone into Beyond they might have worked better for me. With only one viewing down I'd go with Beyond just because I found the first half of Rogue One so dull but I really need to watch them again to give a final verdict. I wish nuTrek was a little less action blockbuster and cartoon villains.

I don't think that's true, over 90% of people here gave it an A or B grade in the rating poll...

I had read so many articles criticizing the movie that I didn't realize that it had received such a high rating.

A fantastic movie that made me love a franchise that I'd fallen out of love with again vs a terrible disappointment that took high hopes for a return to what made it great and crapped all over them.

Rogue One all the way.

Not on here - Beyond has been extremely positively received on this site.

I'm in a minority and dislike most of JJ's output but thought that Beyond even managed to be inferior to his Trek movies...

The one that didn't use Beastie Boys as a plot device.

Funnily enough in the original cut(pre reshoots) of Rogue One when they're leaving the base and they're asked for a call sign Bodhi replied "Beastie.... Boys?" :D

Neither were home runs for me, though I enjoyed Beyond more. But that could just come down to me being a bigger fan of Trek than Wars.
