The UFO Stigma

Please enlighten us then.
You can't scientifically examine a claim. If there were something to examine, it would be more than a claim.

No. Pretty much everything in psychology is rigorously scientifically examined. Maybe you are thinking of other types of social sciences. Gender studies?
Probably not. The only thing both sides can agree on is that there are recorded instances of strange objects that are unexplained. Where they disagree is whether the objects are natural, human made, or involve some other causes we do not understand.

I said psychiatry not psychology and I stand by what I said about psychiatry not strictly being able to apply the scientific method successfully. Not everyone responds the same as others each time which negates the application of scientific method. This is one of the reasons that psychiatry is recently undergoing scientific re-examination. More conditions that were categorized as psychiatric are being shown to be medically caused (by infections in the brain, for instance).
If someone "claims" that they can move objects with their mind power, why can't that be tested? Show me that you can do this under conditions that I can scientifically set as tests.

UFO simply means un-identifed, it could be military, it could be someone with a funny kite/lantern, it could be a drone, it could be those atmospheric fireball sized ghost light which occur naturally especially over bogs, swamps and inspire those English folklore about wisp ghosts and foxfires, it might be atmospheric electrical phenomenon, a test vehicle by NASA or some European or Russian space agency it could be comet, it could be any number of things, UFO the 'U' stands for unidentified not alien

That's nonsense because there are thousands of pictures, videos, testimonies, etc and the skeptics do what they do best...they scream "Fake! Forgery! CGI! Liars! Crackheads! Lunatics!"

You can't "prove" anything to the ignorant.

Well duh!!!!!

If the photos taken were crisp and sharp . Or the videos were not fuzzy and out of focus. We have brilliant photographic and video technology today yet UFO photos and footage still looks like it was taken with heavy gauze on the lens.

No wonder people yell "fake"

Just some quiet musing while reading the flat earth thread.

OK I'll assume for the moment that the Roswell crash was in fact an alien ship full of technology and we did have it, and we did study it and dissect the ship for its secrets. Now some people claim a lot of our technology like microchips and stuff was based in part on the stolen technology from the crashed ship. But what if it was more that ours evolved off their technology?

For example what if the ship had some super advanced hybrid of valve technology. We studied those, took them apart and our modern transistors were just a natural evolution of that? After that came the microchip...

If it were real this is how I imagine it had played out.

Having said that I do believe that there is life somewhere out in space but the distance of point A where we are to B, C, and D, where they are is just so vast we may never meet. I'd put distance as one really major factor that prevents interstellar contact unless there's a way to short that gap like wormholes or some other kind of fast travel.

Discuss.

Based in part from their technology? Evolved from their technology? I fail to see the difference.

Generally these theories assume that we're incapable of coming up with anything really good on our own.

No not that, but maybe that's where the inspiration for ours came from, if you believe that kind of thing. So yeah we did create our own.

Well come on we just started this conversation.. Let's go with this premise.

If our technology was given such a boost as with alien technology how do you think it was achieved?

Perhaps this will assist your musings:
Semiconductors were known to materials physics long before the alleged "Roswell crash," but for various reasons it was far easier to develop vacuum tube technology. Once semiconductor components were developed, the "Tyranny of Numbers" led to monolithic chips mass-manufactured by photo-etching and other techniques. Read about it in THE CHIP: HOW TWO AMERICANS INVENTED THE MICROCHIP AND LAUNCHED A REVOLUTION by T.R. Reid. Not one, but two engineers independently came up with the idea at the same time. If you've read any old science fiction, you'd realize how this one technology radically changed our world in ways few storytellers would have imagined.

"Alien technology" did not make our modern world. Our modern world—in hindsight—imagined alien technology.

Excellent

I suppose that, with the X-Files being on air again, this kind of topic isn't very surprising. But I gotta say I don't see what UFOs have to do with science or technology. This seems like a topic for a different forum.

It does. But which forum?
Misc I suppose. ;)
@Locutus of Bored loves these things.
Well could we please move it there?

Tell me something, Coco, did you already forget that you were the last poster in an existing UFO thread in Miscellaneous Friday night? How could you not know that it would be more appropriate to post pseudoscience topics like this in Misc. then? Why couldn't you just ask this question in that existing topic instead of starting an entirely new thread?

I'm sorry to be blunt, but this is a frequent occurrence for you and has been since you started. You constantly post threads in the wrong forums and start duplicate threads to existing ones, among other issues. How about the next time you get the idea to start a thread, you run a search or check the first few pages of the forums to see if one already exists on that subject? And —I've already asked you to do this before— you really need to start familiarizing yourself with the workings of the board. Spend more time paying attention to how things are done and less time starting new threads. Then once you've got the hang of things better you can start making more threads again. You're a good guy but the little lost lamb routine is getting a bit old at this point.

ETA: OK, now that I've figured out the new merge function in Xenforo, I'm merging this with the existing UFO thread.

I think more and more people would agree it's likely there is life out there somewhere on other planets, but also most people would agree it's probably never been here.

Exactly. I definitely believe in life out there. I'll believe in UFOs visiting Earth when I'm shown one tiny scrap of actual prof.
