The Two Romulan States

Karnbeln

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Can someone give me the lowdown on what the current status of the Romulans is? I only even know they had a civil war because of Destiny, and don't remember too much even from there. What caused the split (I assume it has something to do with Nemesis)? What kind of government is on which side? Who leads who? Who is allied with who?

I'd look it up on Memory Beta, but MB is a bunch of gobbledygook compared to Memory Alpha. Thanks in advance.

The Romulan Star Empire (led by Praetor Tal'aura with Proconsul Tomalak her second) and the Imperial Romulan State (led by the self-proclaimed Empress Donatra) are the two current governments. They are pretty much equally matched for territory and military might, but the IRS has a stronger economy and control of the breadbasket worlds. The split pre-dated "Destiny". In December 2380 (in "Articles of the Federation"), Commander Donatra, who hates Praetor Tal'aura (particularly since Tal'aura executed Donatra's lover Admiral Braeg) left the RSE and took half the military with her, forming her own government. Tal'aura had managed to unite the other factions that had appeared following the chaos of "Nemesis", but Donatra she couldn't hold on to. The IRS has since become allied with the Federation and Klingons, while the RSE is a part of the Typhon Pact.

Basically, after Nemesis, Tal Aura (sp?) became praetor of the RSI under dubious (off-screen) circumstances. As such there were alot of factions vying for power.

One of these factions was the Military, a good portion of which sided with Donatra. Eventually half the military supported Tal Aura, half Donatra and after another military leader made a grab for power and failed, Donatra claimed the "breadbasket" of the RSI and declared it the Imperial Romulan State (IRS) and herself empress.

The trial continues...

You gave us a full list of sources though :D

Thanks to all of you.

I see why I didn't find it on MB. I was expecting it to be covered under RSE.

Sorry but does anyone else think it's ironic that in the context of the ST Universe, the IRS are the good guys!

No They are aligned with the Feds so it makes perfect sense:eek:

I wish someone would explain or at least point to a source for how Tal'Aura is supposed to have become the leader of the Romulan Empire when she was the one who slaughtered the Senate and/or Continuing Committee, ushered in Shinzon's reign of terror, and brought the Reman situation to a crisis point.

It's like John Brown being elected president of the Confederacy.

Well, not exactly, since Tal'aura didn't have any ideological beef with the Romulan state, she just wanted power. And yes, she did assassinate the council, but that's just it -- that created a power vacuum and there was nobody to say she couldn't end up in charge. After Shinzon was gone, power on Romulus was pretty much up for grabs for whoever was most effective at seizing it, and that proved to be Tal'aura.

^And of course...no one actually WITNESSED Tal'Aura's assasination of the Senate--and lived to tell the tale. Any suspicions would thus prove to be...unfounded.

Officially, of course....:shifty:
