the Trill culture. they're supposed to let go of past relationships, correct?

Jadzia and Julian were friends, but not close. You didn't find them hanging out together all the time like Julian and Miles. And Jadzia felt a bit awkward about being his crush object, not wanting to hurt him but also not wanting the relationship he wanted.

Rewatching "Rejoined" for the first time since it aired live...
- Dax got seriously hammered by her own hubris. "No, not taking leave, I can totally handle thi... " SNOG! SNOG! :adore:
- Still, a bit puzzled. Since they're in different hosts, why the magnetism? Do the symbionts shoot out slug vibes or something?
- That technobabble scene was one of the technobabbliest. Is that a word?
- Given the possibility of medical emergencies... not a great choice of chaperone. Especially when I could see the Red Alert signs flashing during their conversation.
- The kiss wasn't a bad decision... it was the inevitable result of numerous previous bad decisions.
- The absolute importance of the continued existence of the symbionts, and the absolute disregard for them if they re-associate... Trill culture is :censored:-ing weird.
- Don't plan on rewatching this one anytime soon. Certainly, love is love... but I'm not into love stories.

Other relationships such as friendships, diplomatic connections, presumably business, etc., seemed to be just fine. The taboo is specifically on past romantic relationships. Though from what we actually saw, it seems much more stringent when it comes to both parties being joined Trill so that the symbionts were involved in the past relationships. Odan being fixated on Beverly through multiple hosts, and Ezri hooking up with Worf, apparently weren't as big of a deal. It's true that the whole Odan story could be considered "early installment weirdness," but it has to be rationalized somehow in the overall context of what we learned about Trill society later on.

Michael Piller's idea of this taboo was to prevent joined Trill from creating an elite and exclusive aristocratic/dynastic/hereditary class of their own kind, or something like that. So it would make sense for there to be some lenience with relationships involving off-worlders.

I must say that I find the whole Trill concept a bit "over the top" or simply too complicated.

I like both jadzia and Ezri as characters but this Trill thing.......is simply too weird.

I suspect that the planet must have a lot of confused and mentaly disturbed people.

Unfortunately, Star trek producers and writers have had a bad tendency to come up with wird things in order to create "something we haven't had in Star Trek before".

The Ocampa nine-year lifespan in VOY was also one of those crazy things that didn't work.

The problem with the whole Trill exile thing is that there's just too many Trills who want slugs. And if a joined Trill gets exiled, they just need to wait until they're old, then find a guy like Verad and say "hey, you want my slug after I croak?" Given that Verad was willing to commit murder to get Dax, I don't think he'd have much issue with waiting a couple months until the re-associate host bought a hole, then he gets his slug and everyone's happy. Except the Trill home world who just got a serious middle finger.
