The Tragically Hip Final Concert

Because there isn't a thread about this already (there must be some Canadians here, right?!). I've got it playing on the radio as I'm riding in a car. Gords voice sounds off but the passion comes through.

Edit : I've crossed into my second province tonight listening to this live. Seems appropriate.

I saw maybe 10 minutes of it on YouTube. It's not really my kind of music.

And yeah, listening to it as you cross provincial borders? Incredible to imagine.
Was the actual moment of crossing happening as they played "At the Hundred Meridian"?

I don't believe so, but I didn't actually realize that I had crossed it until about twenty minutes later.

Not a fan, but I do respect them for being one of Canada's most successful bands. Still, seeing them up there knowing it's their last show, it's a bittersweet moment and the end of an era.

Made In Canada is one of my favourite shows and The Tragically Hip had a big influence on the show, from Blow At High Dough being the theme song, to drunken demands for Poets, to lyrics being repeated through the series as lines.

Also, they have a cameo as the curling team from Kingston in the most Canadian movie ever made, Men With Brooms.

Edit: this part here for those reading this thread not from Canads who may not be aware of the situation.

A big part of the impact here isn't that it's the last concert of a band, it's the situation behind it. If they're just broke up or something it wouldn't be nearly as impactful. The fact that this is a man facing death from no fault of his own (ie not another rock drug overdose but inoperable brain cancer) who chose to spend a good chunk of what likely is the last few weeks/months of his life crossing the country singing his heart out with all proceeds going to charity (well, all proceeds the band makes, not the profit the money gouging resellers pulled in) makes it, well, noble for the lack of a better term.

I hope that this concert becomes available for sale. I'll buy it.

In an odd way it reminds me of Hadfield's cover of space oddity - the situation the song(s) are performed in elevates them beyond previous renditions of the music.

I went to a Hip concert during this final tour and it was fantastic. After it was over I was thinking of all the great songs they left out of the show I saw. I couldn't fault them for leaving them out because to include them they would have had to leave out other great songs. I was tempted to go see another show two nights later to hear some of the songs they left out of the first show but didn't. One of the reasons I didn't was because CBC was showing the final concert and I figured they would play some of those songs there, which they did.

Hats off to CBC for the way they broadcast it, I don't know if any other broadcaster in the world would have done it that way, no commercials, no commentator.:techman:
