The Tough Girl

Mojochi

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Well Tasha Yar wasn't meant to last. It's said that neither the actress nor the creators were pleased with the character, & then there was a while without any tough women on the show, until Ro Laren, & even she didn't last long

Did TNG have a tough time keeping tough women around?

I think that's just the way the series was set up. By Gene himself, and it was the actress Michelle Forbes who didn't want to be a regular on any show. It's not until DS9 that they started to give us strong women regulars.

Picard was tough enough for everyone. I mean, yeah, he is polite and diplomatic, but I just think that he made all those tough women look less tough. Beverly Crusher and Counsellor Troi were outstanding as the regular women on the show.

I thought Troi and Crusher were tough enough. They weren't going to beat anyone up or anything, but tough enough.

Crusher was a strong character. Often stood up to the captain and on occasion tip toed around the prime directive when she found it appropriate.

The men weren't that tough. half the time they tried to prance about as the alpha male they seemed like little boys playing cowboys and Indians.

Compare how everyone was worried that Riker would hurt himself playing in Worfs "exercise" program on the holodeck to O'Brien and Bashir fighting the Battle of Britain? People get strange labels for doing very little.

My problem with tasha wasn't that she wasn't tough, but that at the time, when I was 11, I just didn't think she was pretty, so she might as well have been a man. My taste in women has broadened quite a bit in the last 20 years, but now my problem with Denise is she is such a hammy actress.

Very odd views, you don't seem to have matured much in the last 20 years, though I agree that Crosby was not a good actress. ST isn't really about tough guys.

I actually think if Crosby had been a bit grittier, the way Forbes portrayed Ro, Tasha might've worked out, but her cheesiness got in the way

Uh.... Riker served on a Klingon ship. Picard was tortured by Cardassians, & stabbed through the heart by a Naussican

I think the guys were tough enough

And last time I checked, Worf seemed like a pretty legit badass.

Unless/until the 'alien of the week' beat the crap out of him, or decided to through Worf into a door/bulkhead, etc. ;)

Only on DS9. On TNG he almost always got his ass kicked.
