the totality of TREK

Well...I tried to break it down this way..

TOS, over all, I gave a B+
TAS I give a C
TMP I give a C+
KHAN I give an A
SEARCH FOR SPOCKO I give a C
Voyage Home a B
V (and this is movie I do like ) I give a C-
TUC I gave a B-
Generations (my fav TNG movies) I give a B+
FC I give a B
Insurrection D
Nemesis F-
TNG I give a B
DS9 I give a B+
Voyager I give a C-
Enterprise a c-
STAR TREK XI I give a B+
Over all memory of books I give a B+

And overall? I give star trek a solid B

B overall.
Some junk, some gold, but it all balances out, I think.

Agreed...I dont think its fair to compare it to Star Wars. Because in sheer volume, TREK is all over Star Wars. And that sheer volume, most of it on TV, had to be produced with the crunch of budgets and time contraints.

But...then again..maybe STAR TREK can still win..

Can we focus on the diamonds, please?
I thought we were supposed to take the totality and not "focus" on any thing.

B, compared to the totality of all literature, Shakespeare to Baywatch. Mainly for the positive philosophy that is apparent in the totality.

B/B+ I think Trek is an example of the whole being greater than a sum of its parts. It's a franchise that has managed to stay largely relevant for a *very* long time, despite some absolutely horrid individual offerings.

Bad choice of words on my part- I meant we should take into account that the great stuff should MORE than balance out the bad.

I think it does -- the bad in Trek is usually because of its disappointment, rather than absolute badness. There is very little that I would rate as truly BAD. Movie V is even a "meh," not "bad," when we compare it to all the filmed/written culture out there.

I'd go for a C-.
It'd always be better if they focused on 2 or 3 main characters and weren't afraid to kill the lead roles. You give me REAL fear and the possibility of unpredictable death and I'd kick it up to an A. DS9 was half way there.

Hey, I'm with ya there, I don't hate V as many others do, the only moment in it I can't deal with is when Scotty bumps his head.:wtf:
The only time I can assign "bad" to Trek would be in ridiculous character manipulation- like having Troi get hot for Worf...:guffaw:

As a phenomenon in totality, I'd give it an A...its unprecedented and dwarfs Star Wars (which in all honesty, I think does not have the depth of Trek).

Looking at the movies/tv and books individually, thinking up grades for them and adding it up, it'd probably have to be a C+ or B- ... and looking at the way things are going, that grade is moving upward toward a B+ or even an A.

I'd give it a B. Yes, it's had many stupid moments and it isn't as deep as some people seem to think, but it brought a love of space exploration to the masses, it stayed true to it's basic vision most of the time, and no matter how beaten up it gets, the thing just keeps on going.

^ Star Trek is deep if you have read the books.

Also, the TV series did explore a lot of deep issues that are more relevant to us than many other fantasy/sci-fi space operas.

Without the hope for the future espoused by TOS, I might have become another Bush or Stallin...*

*let the contemporary political debates begin! HAHAHA!!!

I would give 8.5/10. That is mainly due to TNG, DS9 and ENT being so awesome, though Voyager and TOS have some very good episodes as well.
