the totality of TREK

When you take into everything you personally have seen (movies/tv shows) and or read (books/comic books) what is your over all GRADE of this phenom called STAR TREK. A, B, C, D, or F. I did not include a poll because I just want a free flowing conversation..its all subjective of course...

That's quite a question, all right. Including comics & books? Whoah.
I guess, like, B-.
There's been a lot of C & D work done by this phenom over the years, even F...
However, the phenom's outstanding work has been SO outstanding as to warrant the grade I gave it, I believe.

I'm gonna have to say B+. It's a lot of fun, very entertaining, and makes you think. I don't think it has the artistry of say, The Godfather, or the depth of mythos of say, LOTR, but for my money it may be the most engaging fictional universe out there.

Since you mention the phenomenon of Star Trek, I assume you mean the totality of it's impact. I'd have to say it's unmeasurable, one of a kind. There's never been anything like Star Trek in terms of longevity, impact on popular culture, influence on technlogy, etc. It hasn't been an overt, in-your-face presence, but it's always been there, part of our shared culture, for over 40 years. I truly can't think of another TV show that has even a vaguely similar history or which has expanded into so many incarnations.

The cultural stuff I agree with totally. But what do you, based on what you have seen/read, rate Star Trek..

C

Alot of enjoyable moments, but then equal amounts of crap.

I'd give it a solid B to B+. I don't really read the comics and novels so I can't judge based on that but I've enjoyed the majority of the movies and TV show episodes. The scale of the franchise is unmatched and it will probably remain that way for a long time

I'd give it a C.

Along the way we've seen some true classics come out as well as some complete garbage.

They kind of cancel each other out I think.

As a whole, it gets a C from me.

The majority of everything is crap, and hoo boy does Trek have some crap, no offense. Fortunatley, there are some very finely-crafted diamonds hidden in that pile of dung.

Can we focus on the diamonds, please?
I'm curious, what rating would you all give the Star Wars phenom? Take out the first three movies ('77- '83), and it's F! But overall I'd give it a C+ because the good was SO good!
This is just my opinion, of course.

Taking it a bit personal, maybe?

Just because I think there are vast stretches of Trek that are shit, doesn't mean I loathe and despise it.

Or am I just here to troll everyone?

Hey, I feel the same way. I was tempted to give the entire franchise a fail for "Shades of Grey", "Sub Rosa", "Profit and Lace", "Let He Who is Without Sin...", "Threshold", "A Night In Sickbay", "Two Days and Two Nights", STV, and NEM. Fortunately, those are merely the worst of the worst.

I'll give it an 'A'. I'm grading on a curve. When you consider everything that is out there that has no real merit whatsoever, Trek has to be an 'A'.

That's a tough one.
The trek world has a lot of crap in it. Terrible books, movies and countless awful eps. That's the obvious negative side.
But the reason a lot of us love this world they've created is that it's a world that represents endless possibilities, and a hopeful future full of technology, learning and fantastic adventures. It's something that real life lacks, but something we can still strive for. The phenomenon and influence that Trek as a whole has had on our culture makes it immeasurable. :)
