The Tom Paris Man-Skirt Appreciation Thread

^ They shove it all in their pockets, or ask a woman to carry it in her purse. Or they might carry a backpack or briefcase or something that doesn't look like a shoulder bag/purse.

I'll be honest with you. This is one thing that has always annoyed me about Star Trek, in all it's incarnations. Why in gods name would everyone wear the same clothing? There isn't a nation on earth that has the entire population wearing the same outfit. Yet we see this time and time again on Star Trek (and Farscape too, i'm noticing). I guess it has to do with speed of designing and creating costumes for all of the cast on each episode, but really. This little tidbit drives me insane.

I don't know, there are probably only two outfits on any landing site on earth - In North America and Europe it is either blue jeans or a dark suit.

It's my strategy so I can have

a). his wallet in case of a shopping emergency and

b). the keys to the car so I get to drive on the way home!

That's no purse!! It's a European Shoulder Bag!!
I know it's considered funny in america, but everytime I read a man purse joke I ask myself how american men carry their stuff around?

I never noticed Tom's skirt, but the bag never bothered me, as a european guy I think it looks perfectly normal.
I wasn't aware of the stereotype, but I must admit I have a couple of those and I find them quite uselful.

I use a backpack or a briefcase when I have more voluminous stuff to take around (say, a bunch of books or my laptop), but seems like overkill for just my wallet, keys and mobile phone. As for stuffing them in my pockets, it could work if you are wearing a winter jacket or something but in summer? Use my throusers pockets, and run the risk of ruining my shapely silhouette? ;)

I started carrying a bag, it's brilliant. Wallet, phone charger, brolly, sunglasses, bottle of water, and room for other stuff if I need it (shopping etc).

So good on Tom. Especially since they don't have pockets in the 24th century.

On a sincere-serious note: Good on you, too, Tomalak!

On my more usual mock-serious note: I have come to the conclusion that Tom was carrying a bag here because Janeway refused to carry his stuff for him.

The Iguana's shapely silhouette MUST NOT be marred! Get that man a messenger bag!

(My son carriers one and a lot of his friends do too - they are far more practial than men my husbands age . . .)

Count me in as not noticing either the skirt (how *fabulous* is that?) or the purse. But then Tom could be walking around without his head and it would take me few minutes to notice.

Oldstredshrtevr, I covet your avatar! My straights, circs and dpns salute you. ;)

Man, if my husband and I haven't acted out that particular drama a million times. Usually I'm the one who wants him to carry my chapstick, money, keys, and the like in his pockets because I don't want to worry about a bag!

Now I wish they had added a scene of Janeway and Tom arguing in the clothing store.

Janeway was always good at keeping Tom in his place. Making him carry his own purse is one great example. Another can be seen in "Riddles":

You will note that Janeway gets her own bowl, while Tom must share with Harry.

Thank you my dear! My location sez I'm knitting but of course I'm not - alas that I cannot knit and play here on the bbs at the same time! I have only a pair of mittens to complete before I get to work up a little project for me!

I could also knit up a nice little matching bag and leggings for Tom! We could knit for Voyager!

It's good to be the Captain.

At least Tom's wearing leggings under the skirt, so he won't be in need of a knitted willy warmer. Fandom only goes so far. ;)

Well, that image is seared in my mind forever.

 My sincere apologies, but when you've perused knitting blogs as long as I have you can't help but come across willy warmers (or worse), and I feel compelled to share my mental scarring.

Maybe I live in a warmer climate (still, my place can plunge to -10 °C during winter nights), but I'm pretty sure I never needed to put it in a knitted "sleeve" to keep it warm. I'm not even sure I understand how it should work under clothes.

* . . . In other news we can only call weird; a deranged fan was arrested outside the home of StarTrek Voyager actor Robert McNeill. She evidently inundated him with knitwear via mail. When he wouldn't respond to her offerings she set up camp outside his home demanding a meeting. Mr. Macneill has declined to specify the kind of knitwear she sent but said through his agent that a Personal Restraining Order has been ignored repeatedly . . . *
