The Tom Paris Man-Skirt Appreciation Thread

froot

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
This is a thread wherein we celebrate Tom's man-skirt in Time and Again. He did what was necessary to blend in with the Candy Corn Aliens, and for that, we commend both him and his butt.

Next to Year of Hell, this episode is second the most grievous use of the Reset Button in the series: Tom's skirt-and-corset-combo should have never been erased from history! Our only hope is that Kes has some fuzzy memories locked away in that amazing mind of hers.

And he and Janeway both had cute little matching purses. I mean, really. Wondrous.

"Why does she get pants?"

Why, Tom? Because you make it look so good.

Is it weird that I've seen that episode at least three times since the premiere, and I never noticed? Every time, I comment on the horrible costuming in general but this went over my head.

I did notice that in this episode, the part of a futuristic safe was played by a microwave:).

:wtf: Got to say never noticed either or it never phased me... and now that it is brought to my attention

Oh yeah - and the corridor the episode ends in? It reappears next episode as part of the Vidiian base - but because the timeline was reset nobody notices!

I'm pretty sure that corridor was previously painted white, and was where Scotty bashed his head in STV.

Clearly, a rouge interior designer has been roaming the galaxy for hundreds of years, palming off the same fancy corridors on unsuspecting aliens.

Add me to the list of people who have seen this episode several times, but never noticed!

I like the color scheme of the outfits, though - I'm partial to autumn colors.

As for how come Janeway gets the pants? 'Cause she's the Captain, of course! :)

I've only seen it once, but uh...wow. How did I miss Tom having a skirt and a purse? :wtf:

I never noticed it was a skirt!

Love Janeway’s hair in that episode. I think that the producers/studio made too much of a fuss over her hair. I think Janeway would’ve found some balance between the Captain and Kathryn--something like this, that’s both up and down. Now, had she begun the series with her hair more relaxed and over time had it become “stricter,” it would’ve reflected her hiding behind protocol and rules more. As it was, her hair relaxed but Kathryn got lost.

That's no purse!! It's a European Shoulder Bag!!

And re: the skirt...are you sure those aren't just very baggy shorts?

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

I think the "skirt" is actually slit all the way up both his right and left sides... although hard to tell because of the black leggings underneath. It's probably more of a long shirt or something - you can see they're wearing something black under those candy corn shirts.

EDIT: I dunno, I'm looking back through the screencaps and I just can't tell! Maybe they are shorts! The lead terrorist dude has what looks like a man-skirt as well.

I never noticed Tom's costume either until I saw this episode for the billionth time the other day, so put me on the list of "folks who didn't notice" too, lol. There were not a lot of waist-down shots, so I think his darling little outfit was easy to miss.

Colors aside, I sort of liked the costuming - I think layered clothes are kinda funky. And I've always called those guys the Candy Corn Aliens - did they even have a name?

If you hold your hand over the rest of her body, Janeway looks like she's wearing a TOS command gold shirt.

Tom's looks vaguely line engineering red.

Is it bad when you only notice the man purse but don't realize the skirt until it's pointed out? Cuz I've been making "Tom's pretty murse" jokes next "Tom and his retractable tongue" jokes for years.

I'll be honest with you. This is one thing that has always annoyed me about Star Trek, in all it's incarnations. Why in gods name would everyone wear the same clothing? There isn't a nation on earth that has the entire population wearing the same outfit. Yet we see this time and time again on Star Trek (and Farscape too, i'm noticing). I guess it has to do with speed of designing and creating costumes for all of the cast on each episode, but really. This little tidbit drives me insane.

Tom looks "at home" with his man-bag and skirt. Must admit I had never noticed the skirt either. Maybe someone should ask Robby about it at the next convention he attends.

^It seems that Earth's the only planet where people have any individuality.

What drove me nuts were the hideous bowl cuts and shoulder pads on the TNG Romulans. As a military cut and uniform I could buy it (even though it looked ridiculous) - but when Picard and Data go to Romulus and even the damn lunch lady's got the bowl cut and shoulder pads?:wtf::lol:

Froot! Tom! Skirt! Purse! Candy Corn! Bwahahahaha!

(I apologize for not being able to contribute something intelligent to this conversation. Having never noticed Tom's ensemble before, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment.)

And re: the skirt...are you sure those aren't just very baggy shorts?

I do so hope it's a skirt - so much more amusing that way! And let us not forget how dashing Scotty was in a kilt - and the skanted/skorted men of TNG's pilot! good times.

I know it's considered funny in america, but everytime I read a man purse joke I ask myself how american men carry their stuff around?

I never noticed Tom's skirt, but the bag never bothered me, as a european guy I think it looks perfectly normal.
