When did this series become known principally as The Original Series. I seem to recall that back in the 90s, the term Classic Trek was more prevalent.

I just call it Star Trek. I refer to all of the other series by their subtitles.
More or less. "Classic Trek" was never anything more than a nickname, by analogy with "Classic Coke" (which was itself a nickname). Officially, it was always referred to as "The Original Series" to distinguish it from its sequels. Well, "always" in the sense of "after TNG." The TOS subtitle didn't come along until sometime after 1987; it was never used to distinguish the original series from the animated series, say. And I don't think the TAS subtitle for the animated series came along until after the TOS subtitle did. Growing up, I always just thought of it as "the cartoon Star Trek."
Something like that. Since "Classic Trek" was never more than a fan nickname and "The Original Series" was used consistently in publications, video releases, etc., the TOS label crowded out the "Classic" nickname.
"Coca-Cola Classic" was printed on the cans so you would know if you were buying the original formula or the new formula, since both were being sold at the same time for a couple of years. It was the company itself that came up with the name.
Quite right.
I'm not talking about a franchise. I'm talking about a TV show called "Star Trek." If that's too complicated for people then I don't know why I'd want to engage them in conversation in the first place.
Basically I agree with beaker and others. I call the TV show Star Trek and everything else Trek. I will occasionally use TOS for clarity when discussing various series within Trek. There will inevitably be some problems with the new movie coming out, but somehow M*A*S*H survived both a TV series and movie of the same name without mass confusion, and I'm sure Star Trek will, too.
One compromise I will never accept is having the TV series called anything else other than Star Trek. If it is deemed important that there be different names for the TV series and the movie, then the movie can find a new nickname. Star Trek the TV series came first. I say "dibs".

Why not just plain old "Star Trek" ST, and leave all the other initals for the movies and spin-offs.
I personally dislike the use of "The Original Series" much for the same reason I dislike the naming style of things like "Star Wars -- Episode XLII: The Undying Corellian Crapfest."
The first series was called "Star Trek" and while it's fine to distinguish it from the later ones, it rubs me the wrong way to append a subtitle to it. Perhaps that's why I like the idea of the new film simply being titled "Star Trek" -- no "Insurrection," or "First Contact" or "Planet of the Titans" or whatever, just back to the basics of the concept.
