The title of the new series

Obviously its too early to ponder the exact title of the new show since we don't know any plot details. But should it be "Star Trek: Fill in the blank or simply "Star Trek"?. After what happened with Enterprise, I seriously doubt they would risk not having "Star Trek" in the title somewhere.

Having said that, Star Trek - colon "the next next generation" type of title can be a turn off or a bit intimidating to someone who is not a traditional Star Trek fan. Thats why maybe simply calling it "Star Trek" or even "Trek" would be a better option IMO.

Star Trek: United
Star Trek (2017)
Star Trek: Federation
Star Trek Returns

All that to say, I spend a lot of time thinking about this subject but cannot for the life of me come up with a good title that would ring perfectly in the ears of franchise newcomers. It's going to be a daunting task.

This is interesting. I'm kind of thinking that it'll depend on whether it's a continuation of one of the universes or another reboot. I was originally totally convinced it would be Star Trek: (New Series/Ship Name) but in thinking of shows like The Flash or Battlestar Galactica, people have no problem differentiating between original and new, so it could just be Star Trek. And I agree that might be better to bring in new viewers.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more likely it is to me that it'll just be Star Trek.

Keep TOS listed in the catalog as Star Trek: The Original Series and there'll be even less likelihood for confusion (which already won't be an issue).

It really just needs to be "Star Trek," just like the new Battlestar Galactica. But knowing how things work, they'll probably add some goofy subtitle that's completely unnecessary.

It really depends on what the premise of the show is. They could make it something like "To Boldly Go," but without context of what it's about, that's pretty pointless. And there is the issue of how Enterprise was handled.

If they call it just "Star Trek," then it better be about Kirk & Spock. I don't know that it's going to be though, so what's the aversion to colons?

Star Trek Futures

It could be about a trading company.

Actually, 'Star Trek' sounds fine.

'Star Trek: The Adventure Continues'? I dunno.

I could live with its just being called "Star Trek" if it's about Captain April, Pike or Kirk. "The Original Series" is no where in the title of "Star Trek" and it would be nice to see the show referred to by its correct title. So unless the show fits into the era of "Star Trek" (April, Pike, Kirk) then it should have a colon.

Star Trek: The Trek
Star trek: The Motion Picture: The Television Show

;)

Star Trek: TNG made sense because they wanted to explain to the audience that this wasn't the original crew of the concurrent movies on TV (the only other crew anyone had known).

Star Trek: DS9 made sense because there was another Star Trek show on the air and they needed to differentiate.

Star Trek: Voyager made sense because there was another Star Trek show on the air and they needed to differentiate.

Enterprise made sense because it was about the first Enterprise.

It will probably be simply Star Trek. Over half of the TV viewing audience - and a majority of the demographic they're going to target grew up watching a Star Trek other than TOS. We get it and there wasn't much confusion when the movie came out in 2009.

But the 2009 movie was a reboot of the original show's popular crew and ship. It really was all the dressing of what made Star Trek, so it made sense to call it that.

This new series presumably will not be about that Enterprise or Kirk & Spock, so I think calling it the same thing doesn't make much sense. The only way it would make sense is if this were an extremely radical reboot, which I doubt they're going to do.

A subtitle or title variation makes sense.

I think they're going to follow the movie style of no colon where the phrase "Star Trek" is part of the title. So, something like "Star Trek To Fortune" or "Star Trek Ahead" or something that sounds way better than that.

But if they decide against that, then just "Trek" might be good enough to get it into people's heads. Or maybe something else like "Starfleet" or "Starship <...>" if they want to go away from a Star Trek title but still notify people that it's Star Trek.

I never had a problem with Enterprise being just "Enterprise," but I guess I'm the only one.

Maybe they can call it "Star Trek Prime," regardless of what timeline it's set in.

Picard and Data are just as much "Star Trek" to me as Kirk and Spock, if not more given who I grew up with.
