The title card scene! (spoilers)

Re: The title card scene!

Yes, but technically-speaking, running a mile downwind of a super-volcano that's about the erupt isn't going to save anyone.

Funny I remember their village getting destroyed by the eruptions, good thing Kirk made them run a mile away from the initial risk.

Re: The title card scene!

Am I the only one who found the visual effects of the ship rising from the ocean a bit lacking and an enormous missed opportunity? We get a few seconds of nice footage, then a blocked close-up view of the deflector, and that's it.

Maybe they realised how silly it might have looked and thought 'less is more'

I'm sure others agree with you, but I had no problem with that scene. I think it would have been too long for one shot to watch it completely rise out of the ocean. I did like how they cut back to the natives and their shocked faces, though. I didn't really find it any sillier than the fact that a ship can fly in space at warp speed, though. It has to be airtight and would be protected from various space anomalies (dust, particles, just about anything found in space), so I don't see why it can't go underwater as long as it can compensate for the pressure- which, obviously it can, since it wasn't crushed underwater.

Re: The title card scene!

It was a nice transition and beauty shot.

But . . .
I thought it didn't make sense that the natives would draw the Enterprise like that. Why would they draw a top-down picture of something that they had only seen from below? You would think the drawing would have been an attempt to recreate what they had just seen, and that was not the Enterprise from that angle.

If you look at the picture they drew it was a view of the enterprise from below.

Yes.. Correct. I've seen the movie twice and noticed it on the second viewing. They drew the bottom of the ship as that was the only part they managed to get a good look at as it flew by them across the sky towards the volcano..

Am I right in thinking this is the only time in the two movies we've ever seen the ship's bussards glowing blue?

I suppose they did it to make it look like it was traveling fast. Can't remember ever seeing them glow like that before though.

In pretty sure those nacelle caps glowed bright blue in 09. Especially when the Ent drops out of warp and opens a can of whoop ass on the Nerada. Also when they're trying to warp out of the singularity at the end I guess. And probably when we see it head on during warp. So maybe, unlike the TOS version, they only glow when actually being used.

Where did you get that pic??

Future JonnyBoy gave nuJonnyBoy the formula for screencapping trailers. Or maybe getting hold of the digital presentation disc or something.

Re: The title card scene!

An utterly fantastic opening scene. I was grinning like a fool when the title came up on the screen. :D

Yep. One of the crew (I can't remember who) mentioned that they were clear of the 'kill zone,' which to me means that they were far enough away from the volcano to avoid any lava that might be prematurely ejected from the volcano pre-eruption (which is exactly what ended up happening).

Obviously if Spock had died and/or the device hadn't functioned properly then it all would have been a moot point. But the idea was to get the natives clear of the immediate area, just in case something happened before Spock could do his job.

The bussards weren't glowing blue in any of those scenes.
