The Three Musketeers' in-dev. Doug Liman to direct

Well is this good or bad news? 3D means it is going to be action and 300esque, doesn't it? Why would someone make a relatively straight period and becostumed adventure in 3D. Or this could mean they are going for a spoof type comedy ala Will Smith's Wild Wild West.

Understandably that one was shelved for competing audiences and flooding and money and such, but having the two go head to head might have been interesting as well, like the Battle of the Bonds or the two Exorcist prequels. I for one much prefer the tv movie version of Sweeney Todd that came out a year before the musical.

Eh, oh well. Anyone for Michael York making an appearance?

This trailer was such a disappointment! Really, swashbucklers in 3D? And that is your main point, its in 33333DDDDDDD! Total waste of what looks like a decent cast. Really, if this isn't a sign that 3D has jumped the shark, I don't know what is.

Coming up next The Tortoise and the Hare in 333333DDDDDD!!!
Followed by Smurfs in oh, wait, that one is real, isn't it? Good God.

The Crucifixion in 33333DDDDD! <roll>

Yeah, Milla Jumping off buildings in France. Exactly what I think of when I think of Musketeers. Puh-leeeze.

Paradise Lost in 33333DDDDD! Man, I can't wait until 20 years from now when all these 3D movies look like crap just like the 80s and 50s ones. Open your mind and suspend your belief, people! That's all it takes, really!

You know, I was thinking about this the other day. Pretend you are at a play. If you turned up the orchestra, shined and strobed lights everywhere, slid cutouts infront of the performers and slid a curtain or two across them, How the funk are you supposed to see the actors and hear what is going on?!

Back in the day, when you actually had to splice and layer all the sound and effects onto the film itself- what happened? It got weighed down and deteriorated. This is exactly what modern effects and 3D bells and whistles and crap are doing to cinema- destroying it into nonsensical drivel. Please stop.

Fin rant. :)

So this trailer isn't the Doug liman one? Thank fuck for that.

On the one hand: Flying ships? Milla Jovovich? Ninjas? WTF is this shit? Why didn't they call it Chevalier D'Eon and be done with it?

OTOH - Christoph Waltz and Mads Mikkelsen as Richelieu and Rochefort? Shit, that means I'll have to watch it...

Yeah, the sad thing about this is the cast isn't half bad. It's just everything else that looks terrible.

It'll be hard going to find a Musketeers that can surpass the Michael York, Oliver Reed, Albert Finney, and Richard Chamberlain version.

I think you mean Frank Finlay. Albert Finney was not in those movies.

Great films, though.

You had me going there! :rommie: Albert Finney would have been great in pretty much any role except maybe Constance.

EDIT: As for the trailer, well the movies from the 70s will have no competition there. ;) About all I can say for it is that at least they didn't feel compelled to have Logan Lerman fake up some absurd accent.

The flying ship and overall tone suggests the director would rather be doing Pirates of the Caribbean. Maybe they should just go whole hog and use the story as inspiration for a more out and out fantasy approach instead of trying to find a way to make a woman fencing in a hoop skirt look anything but ridiculous.

it looks a reasonably fun fantasy action flick, but they really shouldn't be calling it "Three Musketeers" when it so obviously isn't - I do wonder if they just wanted to make a Chevalier d'Eon live action movie without paying any royalties to the manga/anime creators...

This trailer seems all right compared to the teaser released earlier this year. What is wrong with Logan Lerman as D'Artagnan. He can't be any worse or better than Chris O'Donnell was in the Disney movie. The look and feel of this trailer actually reminds me of the "Van Helsing" film with Hugh Jackman. Hopefully this is better. This film seems to be a very loose adaption of "The Three Musketeers".

Yeah I really like most of the cast, and the folks playing the actually Three Musketeers I think could certainly handle a straight adaptation. However I agree this should just be some sort of Cavalier mix taking liberties with all kinds of sources, because this mix of Musketeer and Sky Captain World of Tomorrow style is just...off putting, to say the least. If the formula didn't work for Van Helsing, why try it again?
