Why do Spock and McCoy lie to Kirk about hearing the captain's final orders?

Maybe Kirk actually emerged from that inter-dimensional rift into a parallel universe where Spock and McCoy had not listened to Kirk's final orders... and the rest of Season 3 took place in that parallel universe....

......No- not really. ;) I actually go with GSchnitzer's take on it.

Why do Spock and McCoy lie to Kirk about hearing the captain's final orders?

They are backing away from intimate knowledge which would reconfigure their relationships. Kirk shared something with them in that message which would force Spock and McCoy into a different sort of relationship (e.g., increased mutual respect, changes in verbal behaviors, acknowledgement of mutual regard), but now that Kirk is back, they don't need to grow into that relationship, so they hit the reset button. Kind of like kissing someone at a Christmas party, but then both parties pretending it never happened later on.

This says it very well.
