The Tales of Alvin Maker

I was never a big Orson Scott Card fan (don't get me started on how incredibly over-rated I think Ender's Game is), but I did love the first three books of the Alvin Maker series. Sadly, he wrote himself into a corner at the end of Prentice Alvin and the next two books wandered around aimlessly, so I never read the last one.

I'm curious if anyone ever read the entire series and what they thought of it? Was The Crystal City any good? Do you think any part of the series is stronger than the rest? Any other general reviews?

I attemped to read the first one, but I couldn't get into it. I'll take the Ender-verse any day!

As a matter of fact, I thought Crystal City was a big improvement over the previous two entries, but not as fresh and engrossing as the first three. It was an improvement in the sense that the story actually moved forward and stuff actually happened, while Alvin Journeyman and Heartfire seemed to idle in neutral.
