So I'm just not sure with what you mean or imply when you say we don't know what year it is in the "Flash sideways".
Those years happened. The FS Losties don't remember them. Their memories have been replaced by new memories of a past that never occurred.I'm not sure I'm following. Are you saying that the "flash sideways" timeline is in 2007? 3+ years after flight 815 originally took of from Sydney?
Where did those missing 3+ years go then?
How do you know the FS Flight 815 is the same as the original Flight 815? Desmond was on the former and not on the latter. That could be a changed timeline, or it could be a very similar event repeating years later.I don't get how it could be any other year then 2004 in the "flash sideways" since we know that is when Flight 815 from Sydney to L.A. took off with all of the Losties on board.
Exactly! Even Claire's ultrasound date doesn't prove anything. If memories have changed and people blip into existence, the calendar can change as well. (However, if the producers had never stated the current FS year at all, I'd be more sure of this theory - the fact that they stated the year implies that they've thought of this theory and that's not what they're doing.)Yes, the flashsideways are clearly intended to be taking place in 2004...but is it really 2004, or have the Losties just been affected in a way that makes them think it's 2004?
The main argument for it is that it avoids the problem of the audience not accepting the validity of the FS storyline because "those aren't the real characters." We expect there to be two sets of characters and it would be a surprise to most people to find out that was never the case. The Lost writers have been pretty good at twisting their plotlines this way and that, but generally hitting on whatever approach makes emotional sense to the audience - the story feels right even when it makes no logical sense. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that the flashsideways are taking place AFTER the events in 2007, but I'm just not sure how or why.
Not to be rude, but that whole thing is a really dumb theory. Those years happened. The FS Losties don't remember them. For the FS to be in the future from where we are now, the whole world must have forgotten the "famous" Flight 815. If the whole world's memories have changed, then the main characters' memories would have changed too.
That's the only thing I can think of that keeps the FS in the same universe, same timeline, like the producers are claiming.
The wildest part of this is the existence of people like Jack's son, that can't be written off as changed memories. But in Lost anything is possible. The kid just blipped into existence out of the clear blue sky.

You mean the flashsideways is Jacob's loophole? It's much more likely that something is going to happen where one or more of the main characters will have to make a decision to stay with things as is, or jump back to the convenient 'dent' in time they created when they detonated the nuke (using Desmond to do it, no doubt).
For a few reasons, I really hope the writers avoid this cliche.I'll put my money on Ben - sacrificing himself for the others and redeeming himself in the one go.
