I quite like Rey...I think she's one of the best parts of this new trilogy, along with Kylo and Finn. I basically figured that she was supposed to be a prodigy on the level of Luke or maybe even Anakin, in terms of raw force potential. I always like how Kylo actually looks afraid of her in the aftermath of the interrogation scene in TFA. (I never got the impression that Kylo was highly talented himself, so I was surprised when I heard Snoke's dialogue in the second movie.)

Considering every other Force-user we’d seen up to that point was a bunch of children, Leia (who apparently forgoed honing in the skills the Dark Side would consider useful,) and a Force-less Luke, maybe ‘the strongest’ was being graded on a steep curve.

Axing most of the competition in their sleep a decade previous, would tip the scales somewhat.

It’s really like the haters didn’t even watch the movie, just edited out of context clips or simply lack the ability to pay attention to what happened. Because really nothing they complain about is in the film itself, they just insist that it is.

Or, it's like some people aren't interested in having an honest discussion about it.

Kylo seems like a try hard loser and extremely immature. He literally throws tantrums when he doesn't get what he wants. He's a Vader fanboy, but can't even commit to being evil. He's unsure of himself yet wants to be extremely powerful. His men don't seem to respect him, Hux seems ready to kill him and his new Empire doesn't seem to be built on solid ground. In TLJ his army saw him utterly embarrassed by someone who wasn't really there.

I've always just assumed that Anakin did more damage than anyone realized when he choked Padme, but the droids somehow missed it, so just they just said she died of a broken heart.

"All organic damage has been repaired." The droid checked another readout. "This systemic failure cannot be explained."

Not physically, Obi-Wan thought.

I can't tell whether you meant this as a negative or positive assessment, but I agree with what you said. I think it makes him an interesting character, although I can see why people dislike the character for the same reasons.

Just seems weird that in a thread where one of the lead actors from the franchise is expressing his discontent that it comes as a surprise to anyone that not everyone likes what someone else likes. Touching on the actual topic Mark Hamill didn't exactly sound thrilled with it all either.

There is not liking something and then coming up with hyperbolic arguments to support the dislike. Thus far, it seems that is it more straw gasping to justify personal feelings rather than just going "I don't like them. YMMV."

Instead, it's the same litany: Rey is a Mary Sue, Rey showed up the OT crew, Rey worst than all the rest. Her heroic journey is just a pest."

People don't have to like everyone. My high school chemistry teacher told a story about how there was a kid in his home town when he was growing up that he would cross the street just to punch. We don't have to get along with everyone. But, it's disingenuous to the conversation the claim her uber skills while denying the same in others in the same franchise.

I think it makes him interesting, especially in comparison to your standard Star Wars villain.

But it’s fine, because a bunch of guys who’d never even employ a woman to play the female parts they wrote, wrote the same thing in decades to centuries ago. That means it’s a homage and inspired, and therefore criticism proof.

Sure people - like Campbell - criticise Classic Literature all the time. But whatever.

I don't think it's good end for the character, but it at least doesn't undermine her the way saying she simply "died of a broken heart" does.

Very broadly speaking, I've found that there are basically two types of Star Wars fans. The ones that love the action and spectacle of lightsaber fights and space battles, and the ones that also pay attention. The former group are generally the ones most perplexed by the notion of a Jedi *not* carving everyone up into steaming chunks of partially cooked meat.

It's not talked about much but I think Luke throwing away his lightsaber in RotJ and so having to be saved by Vader was one reason RotJ was a lot less liked than the others in the trilogy; even people who dislike that do like the scene of Vader actually saving him so there won't be much direct complaining about its setup but that is arguably an underwhelming and unheroic ending for Luke. It does make sense and isn't unfair that people who like the films overall may dislike the Jedi philosophy and how it can influence moments in the films.

If Luke had killed Vader he would have fallen to the Dark Side. He wouldn't even be able to fight the Emperor without killing himself. Most of the dislike is due to Ewoks, which is unfounded because they are total badasses. Stormtroopers are dying left and right while only one Ewok is shown dying. They probably ate the bodies during that celebration, the Rebels had to spread the word to avoid the stew.

I actually like ROTJ more than A New Hope, and I love the Ewoks, but then again even at 31 I still have a soft spot for cute fuzzie little critters. Especially badass cute fuzzy little critters.

I don't anyone who actually understands Luke's whole arc could possibly not like Luke throwing away his lightsaber. I honestly find stuff like that more heroic than just killing the bad guy.

Precisely so. Luke's arc is often going a bit different than many standard tropes, but still makes him an interesting character.

That's my feelings as well. No, I would not have done the PT, the OT and the ST the way they have been done. But, I'm not upset or mad that it didn't go how I would have done it.

I completely agree, there are tons of stories I love that don't go the way I want, or the way I would go if I was making them.

I actually kind of like it when movies surprise me, they're some of my favorite ones. I go to see movies for an interesting story and have an emotional reaction, not to be comforted and be told that all my dreams about some character have come true.
