The Strain (Guillermo del Toro's New FX Summer Show)

There was a quick Super Bowl commercial for a new Summer FX show from Guillermo del Toro called The Strain. What exactly is this show supposed to be about? It looks like it is some sort of post apocalyptic show, which is great 'cause I love post apocalyptic shows!! Does anyone have any more details on the show? Or maybe a link to the commercial that aired during the Super Bowl (not sure if there was more than one commercial).

My first thought was that it might be a take on The Andromeda Strain. But my google-fu tells me it's a vampire-based story.

Interesting ...

Hmmm... I won't read the book before I watch the show because I abhor spoilers. Is it weird that a disease that turns people into zombies seems more realistic to me than one that turns people into vampires?!?!?! Hahaha! Okay, neither are realistic, but a plethora of movies and books have gotten us used to the idea. Anywho, it'll be interesting to compare The Strain to The Walking Dead.

I Am Legend features vampirism as an epidemic.

It's been so long since I have seen that movie. I thought they were just really fast zombies that only came out at night. Looks like I need to re-watch I Am Legend! Speaking of I Am Legend, weren't they gonna make a sequel to that movie??

It's not, technically, a disease. In The Strain, the vampire epidemic is spread by capillary worms, not a virus or bacteria.

In the Will Smith adaptation they're mutant creatures, but in the original novel they're vampire-like people. They've been developing another movie, either a prequel or a sequel, for years now. Whether it'll come to fruition remains to be seen.

If any you are gonna watch this show I highly recommend that you read the trilogy by chuck hogan.

I enjoyed the first novel in the series, The Strain, so I am excited that is going to be adapted into a TV show. When I first read the book I was thinking to myself that del Toro was going to adapt it into a movie, so I am not surprised at these turn of events.

I wonder when exactly the show will premiere. It's so vague to say it'll premiere in "the summer."

Hmm, read the first two books but haven't got around to finding the third. To be honest I found it more than a little derivative, interesting but it didn't really add anything new to the genre.

Watched the first episode. I liked it, it felt different than a lot of other horror movies or shows. Would have been nice if they didn't telegraph all the scares, but still, I think I'll come back next week.

i'm still interested...but my wife felt it was going to be cheezy..

Should i keep trying to get my wife to watch (she WAS really excited to see it, but was disappointed)

I enjoyed it, nice set-up for the series.

Clever the way they homaged Dracula by having this vampire arrive in New York in the same fashion that Stoker had Dracula arrive in London -- on a mysterious vessel full of murdered people. Just instead of a sailing ship (the Demeter, I think), this vampire arrives on a plane filled with his victims. A nice little update to the classic story while still keeping the bit about the coffin. Well done.

I hope the series maintains this level of quality for the remainder of the season.
