The story of the new "Forbidden Planet" (likely SPOILERS)

The fact that so many folks who don't appreciate stuff like Moore's "Galactica" object to remakes in general is itself a strong argument in favor of remakes and reimaginings.

Can you explain that a bit?

I think this post can best be explained with an allusion to Seinfeld.

In one episode, George complains that nothing ever goes right for him, and that his instincts are always wrong. Jerry suggests that if that's the case, then he should do the opposite of what his instincts tell him. If his instincts are always wrong, then the opposite must be the right thing to do. George does exactly this, and transforms his life, for the better.

In this case, people who agree with RJDiogenes are in the role of George. If we want to create good sci-fi, we should create the opposite of what they like and want.

Okay, I can see that. I'm not as well-read or sophisticated in my arguments, though. I'm of the position that because someone does not "appreciate" a given show (whether it be nuBSG or B5 or Firefly or whatever) does not mean said person is of inferior ability to decide what is "good". They simply have different tastes. Personally, I am not a fan of remakes if the original work is regarded well, but I don't dismiss those remakes out of hand.

Is there anyone in Hollywood these days that has an original idea for a movie? Not a remake, not filming a novel or comic book, not redoing TV shows that should be left alone, but a frigging original movie?

You mean like turning The Tempest into a science fiction movie?:shifty:

You consider Seinfeld well-read and sophisticated?;)

Actually, I agree with you--up to a point. Certainly, in the case of the three series you mention.

But keep in mind--Dennis was debating with someone who was dismissing NuBSG as "dull gray juvenile posturings" and "inferior to the original" (which, it was implied, was already pretty bad).

It's hard not to read comments like that as anything but reflections on the good taste (and even the maturity) of anyone who enjoys the series.

So I would say that, in this case, "George" only got back what he was giving out.

Oh no... it's more that I'm terrible at conveying my ideas at times. What I meant is that when it comes to debates such as this, I'm not the most sophisticated person at conducting them. In truth, I wasn't meanign to refer to Seinfeld at all.

True. I went back and reread that and I see the point Dennis was making. My error for missing that.

Actually, you have it backwards; my Post was in response to Dennis. But in the future I'll be sure to never say anything bad about something that somebody likes. :D

Hm... I wonder what will remain of that.

Sleep Dealer may not be set in space, and it may not be a big masterpiece - and it's also not from Hollywood but from Mexico, which proves your point, Spider, but it's a 2008 science fiction movie with an original story.

A remake of Forbidden Planet would certainly not have its charm - I wonder what they mean to do with the music, for example - but there is room for fleshing it out. If reviews are not too terrible, I'd like to see it.
