The Star Trek Encyclopedia

What about "print on demand"?

Feasible? Impractical?

For something as big and extensively illustrated as an encyclopedia, POD would be more expensive for the consumer, I suspect (based on looking at some of lulu.com's products). And all the pre-printing production costs (getting someone to actually write the thing, edit it, lay it out, etc) would still be there, so there'd still be no guarantee that the book would make any money.

Yep, the reason the last edition of the "ST Encyclopedia" had all its new stuff appended to the end of the book was due to the exorbitant, prohibitive costs to redo the layout, and keep the price point affordable.
