The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999!

Could it be that because of Discovery, they're halting sales of the encyclopedia until the series has finished its first season so that they can include details from that show?

If they are going to do that, then it might be better to have the cyclopedia on a web site. Then it could be updated at the end of each season. It could be free with ads, or you can subscribe for no ads and added content like videos to supplement articles, like the Battle of Wolf 359 as seen in DS9.

Sooooo... Memory Alpha. But less wordy.

This is what the upcoming official Babylon 5 encyclopedia is doing -- having an "offline" hardcopy version for purchase right alongside an ongoing, updatable online edition, either version of which fans can pay for lifetime access to:

And it looks like this one is at the very least going to rival the new Okuda edition of the ST Encyclopedia in terms of scope, although of course there are currently no new B5 stories in production right now.

The Babylon 5 folks are doing something similar. B5 Books has just published a limited-printing of a 2-volume encyclopedia. All the info from that book is also on a website (behind a paywall), editable only by staff, and w/ lots of video, both from the shows and newly-produced. An interesting idea, but not cheap for the purchaser/subscriber.

One of the things they're doing to make it more affordable to folks is to offer various installment-plans for paying for this -- either four payments, eight payments, or all-up-front (you gain access to the online version after four payments, I think). My copy just shipped, so it should be here pretty soon.

It looks very well done, and I am sorely tempted. But, whether in a single payment or in 4-8 no-interest installments, I just couldn't justify the final overall price tag. Mrs DrCorby would kill me, and she's the bigger B5 fan... :shifty:

An actual, physical book is always a better option in my opinion. E-books or online encyclopedias are probably more convenient, but I'm an old-fashioned guy and I just prefer to have books, films and TV shows on a physical format.
