The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999!

Which still has the old cover (and costs a lot less). Is it the old edition?

It sure looks that way:

From 'audet IX to Zytchin III, this book covers it all. This is the ultimate reference book for all Star Trek fans!
Added to this edition are 128 new pages. This addendum highlights the latest episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine®, Star Trek: Voyager® and the newest feature film, Star Trek: Insurrection™.

The thousands of photos and hundreds of illustrations place the Star Trek universe at your fingertips. Planets and stars, weapons and ships, people and places are just part of the meticulous research and countless cross-reference that fill this book.

Regarding the Kindle edition, there's a strong possibility that it will update to the new version automatically when that is released. This has happened to me with the recent Star Wars novels. I purchased them on Kindle when they were first released in hardcover and they had the hardcover artwork, then when the paperback version came out, the Kindle artwork was updated to show the paperback art (it was taller and skinnier). Happened again with Brad Meltzer's Inner Circle, and 11/22/63 just recently. Seems the Kindle version always updates to the latest physical version; may be worth the risk to buy the old version on Kindle now for a lot less.

That's just cover art, though; can you confirm that any of the actual content in the book itself changed for those?

I can't with any of the books I have. There were no changes I'm aware of between the hardcover and paperback, but it looks to be the case here:

The Kindle version is of the updated paperback that came out in 2011, whereas the hardcover shows as the original 2001 release. Same with The Phantom Menace novelization:

Whether this could be a publisher-only thing, I'm not sure.

If it does not cover all seasons of all six Star Trek series including TAS and all thirteen films including STBeyond, then it is already, for that price, incomplete when it is released October 2016.

Personally, whether TAS is included will have minimal impact on my decision to purchase. I'm just not that invested in that particular series.

YMMV.

I may not be that interested in my National Geographic Atlas's page on, say, the North Atlantic, but I'd still consider it a shortcoming if they left it out.
Agree, 6 series[all seasons] and 13 films should all be included in this October 2016 book. It is not like we are asking for fan made episodes/films to be included. Otherwise is this just a repackaging of existing books with limited additional information added. This is this 50th anniversary of Star Trek first airing it would be worth the price to have it be complete.

To be fair, the "limited" information that I'm aware of includes a great deal of information on at least DS9 and VOY as well as the entirety of ENT and presumably at least two of the Nuniverse films.

I'm just saying, calling it "limited" seems like an unfair understatement of the situation.

And as I tried to indicate with my use of YMMV, I was merely expressing my opinion on the matter, not suggesting that anyone else should feel the same way.

I have no problem with you not needing TAS included. I am sincerely talking about the publisher, writers and editors of this new book, not you. Like you, I am expressing my opinion towards them.

TrekCore validates your comments, good.
TrekCore states: "This new two-volume, hardcover printing is going to be over a thousand pages long, with over three hundred pages of new content covering Deep Space Nine Season 7, Voyager Seasons 5-7, all of Star Trek: Enterprise, the final TNG film Star Trek: Nemesis, and even the rebooted J.J. Abrams film universe launched in 2009."

Although, still no TAS. ;)

The Amazon review states: "This new version of the Star Trek Encyclopedia is a reissue of the 1997 edition, plus a 128-page supplement of additional material that updates Deep Space Nine to the end of its run and Voyager to midway through season five. It also covers the movie Star Trek: Insurrection. ..."
So, if this is true is does not included seasons 5-second half, 6 & 7 of Voyager, Enterprise, TAS and the films Nemesis, ST2009, STID, STB .

Yeah, that review would be for the third edition, released in 1999.

It's not a Kindle book, but I got a Nook versions of the first book in The Wheel of Time series, The Eye of the World, that had messed up page numbers. I recently removed it from my tablet and redownloaded it, and the numbers had been fixed. So sometimes updates will change the contents of an e-book, at least with Nook books.

Lookin' good!

The animated series should have been included. This book should have had the same motto as the NY Times. You don't have to read all but its nice to know its all there. Also it is already outdated with the new movie and upcoming new series. They should consider releasing an annual yearbook with added updates just like Encyclopedia Britannica used to publish back in the day.
