The Star Trek Encyclopedia: A Reference Guide for the Future, which has long been the go-to source for everything related to the Star Trek canon, soon will be updated for the first time since its release in 1999. Due out in autumn 2016 from becker&mayer!, the updated The Star Trek Encyclopedia, by Michael Okuda and Denise Okuda, will include a completely new design, illustrations and exhaustively researched and detailed entries on the characters, ships and events from the last 15 years of Star Trek television shows and movies. In other words, the updated Encyclopedia -- with its 300 new pages -- will cover Star Trek: Voyager seasons 4-7, Star Trek: Enterprise seasons 1-4 and Star Trek Nemesis, and it will include an appendix detailing the recent J.J. Abrams big-screen reboot.

The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

StarTrek.com has announced that The Star Trek Enclopedia is getting it's first update since the last release in 1999. It will now include all of VOY,. ENT., Nemesis and will include an appendix for the Abramsverse. The new version will have 300 new pages, and is being released by becker&mayer! next autumn.
The way they mention 300 new pages makes me wonder if this will just be the same version with the 300 new pages added into the old, or a whole new version

Re: UPDATED Star Trek Encyclopedia - fall 2016!

Oops, I also just posted a thread about this too.
I'm not sure if I want this yet. It's cool that they are doing an update, but if it's just stuff you can look up online for free, I'm not sure if it'll be worth getting.

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

Sounds good. Info from the latter half of DS9 Season 7 was not included in the third edition. It had info on what happened to the main characters, but there was no entry for "What You Leave Behind" for example.

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

Very pleased to have an updated Encyclopedia finally. Since the article on Star Trek.com says it's a new design, I'm not worried that the new material will be tacked on, just like the last refresh, and for 99 dollars, it better not be!
I know sites like Memory Alpha contain more info than any print book can, but I still enjoy the Trek reference books of old. Like Samuel T. Cogley, I do appreciate the printed word.
While the retail price is steep, the actual price will probably be lower at places like Amazon. I hope it does well enough to spark further interest in the reference books. An updated Chronology would be nice too. And maybe a second volume to the "Federation: The First 150 Years" book.

Wow, stright from the list of things I never thought I'd see. Awesome.

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

I'm not interested in this, but here's to hoping the Chronology gets updated next.

Re: UPDATED Star Trek Encyclopedia - fall 2016!

As a librarian, I'm all for print versions of books. And with it not coming out until next fall, plenty of time to save up money for it.

Re: UPDATED Star Trek Encyclopedia - fall 2016!

Yes! I'm VERY excited and will definitely get this. I was always bummed that it stopped short, as it were. w00t!

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

Well hotdamn!! :D That is good news! I was considering getting a new version for my old version, but this is much better. :D

Re: UPDATED Star Trek Encyclopedia - fall 2016!

I'm all for Memory Alpha and Beta, but I'm excited by the prospect of a updated Encyclopedia. It will be so nice to peruse while sitting in the armchair with reduced light, or flip through the pages just before one turns the light off.

Plus, who knows how many nuggets of never-before-heard-of info it might include.

Re: UPDATED Star Trek Encyclopedia - fall 2016!

Fantastic!!! Trek seems really fully back with this release.

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

According to the Okudas on Facebook, the reboot movie entries won't be an appendix but will be integrated into the book, "just like any other legitimate alternate timeline":)

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

:biggrin:Yay! This is great news1 for a long time I've been hoping for an updated version of the encyclopedia, that would include the rest of the Voyager series and Enterprise and the new movies too.

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

Great news. Hope they eventually have a lower cost paperback edition. Also it would be great if they release small update annuals every time a new movie is released. Would be great if it was in a binder format so that additional new info could be added.

Excellent! Hopefully if this is a success we'll get an updated Chronology too.

Re: The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999

This is certainly one announcement I never thought I would see in a million years. Am looking forward to see how it turns out.
