The Spore Drive Technology. What Do You Think About It?

How about all the god-like aliens in first season TOS. Or Gary Mitchell and his magically increased ESP which allowed him to terraform a planet in seconds at will. Or the Q-Continuum. Charlie X. Squire of Gothos. The Witch and Wizard in Catspaw. Nomad repairing the Enterprise to go Warp 10 then it never being brought up again. Nazi, Roman, Gangster, Greek God planets. Fluidic space. Vger. The Omega Particle. Project Genesis.

I could go on, but I think the point is made. Trek has always had incredibly absurd plots and handwaved alien abilities/ or advanced technologies.

What bothers you the most about the tardi?
What bothers me the most is:
1, The fact that ten years before STOS we now have improbability drive. Throughout all the Treks after that, never a mention of FUNGUS space. It just doesn't belong here at this time. And its theory is just awful.
2, Spore drive now exists without the Space Tardi, all we need to do is inject the special sauce into people and we get the equivalent of a super computer that can plot any point in the universe.
3, Even without a Tardi, or a human sacrifice, it can still make short jumps that could be used in combat.
4, Killing the spore drive is going to be more difficult than just getting rid of a Tardi. Star Fleet is building a bunch more of these spore drive engined ships.
Other than that, I'm happy Star Trek is back on.

You honestly don't think the writers are keenly aware of how this new tech is NEW? How it doesn't fit in with established canon?

They are going to address it. It might not happen in the next week or even two weeks from now, but you can be sure that the writers know they've taken some risky steps which need to be resolved by the end of the series. Note that I said 'end of the series'. It could be 7 years from now before it gets resolved. Just saying.

Yes and they never mention all the androids Kirk encountered. Or the various suped up Warp drives the Enterprise had installed. Or the TK drug. Or the speed drug. Or the Guardian of Forever.

And as mentioned there's a drug that give you telekinesis. And another one that grants super speed and invisibility. And a super computer that gives you super surgery skills...

Season hasn't ended yet

Uhm perhaps you noticed the small side effect of Stamets' reflection just wandering off by itself? The spore drive is gonna fuck with reality itself, ya'll.

Stamets was spouting some nonsense technobabble to disguise how ridiculous and unscientific the concept is.
(Stamets and the shows writers have apparently never heard about Planck scale)

The reality is, that they might as well have the navigator do bong hits of sub space herb, and use that explanation for how the Discovery travels. They could call it the Bong-Drive.
Looking at a Medusan drove Larry Marvick bonkers, and he turned some levers, pushed some buttons and managed to warp the Enterprise into a weird pink (or blue in the remastered version) dimension in TOS.

How is this any more plausible? Or the time the Equinox crew used alien corpses to upgrade their warp engines? Or the infinity transwarp salamander drive of Voyager?

I just wonder how much mileage can be gained by cherry picking other absurdities from other shows to prop up Discovery's story lines like this one? The smokescreen eventually clears and Discovery's spore drive technology shtick standing on its own merits.. still looks stupid.

Probably the same amount of mileage that comes from ignoring the absurdities of previous series to criticise discovery's storylines?

We're fans of Star Trek, but we love it for what it is. Sometimes it's very silly. Very implausible. We're cool with it.

You're mad that Star Trek isn't what you want it to be. And we're pointing out that it was never that.

It's not personal so I'm not mad. It's a perspective that when these other shows had silly story lines - usually one episode length, not a running theme.. they had to be judged on their own. There was no Discovery back then to hide behind and compare with. Discovery, if it needs to refer back to something else to make it look just as silly is not doing a good job.

Sure ok.

TNG got compared to TOS
DS9 got compared to TNG
VOY got compared to DS9 and TNG
Enterprise got compared to them all.

And the point? Is it to say hey.. look at this silly story.. gosh Discovery is just as bad? I mean that's kind of sad. If you have to compare with the worse to look good isn't that a flaw in Discovery?

Not sure if that was just a holo mirror left on with a 5 sec image delay. Now we're fucking with reality.
