The Spore Drive Technology. What Do You Think About It?

It's pretty clear that Burnham was very much against using the creature to operate the spore drive once she realised it was hurting the creature. The continued use of the creature is probably going to be a cause of conflict between Burnham and Lorca, In fact, having to use a living being to operate it is probably going to be why the Federation does not continue to use it.

This is why I'd probably be a horrible strafleet captain. Cause in my head this is simple.

Immoral? yes. But one creature's pain = hundreds of saved lives so far, more potentially in the future?

Won't sleep well but can't say no. Easy decision if not heavy.

I am wondering if it will hace any links to iconian tec or links with mashing your creatures up in equinox?

Maybe they should have considered the hemp drive. It seems it would be easier for everyone to accept. It would appeal to the stoners crowd who generally attribute all things that originate from cannabis sativa to be good. It would be a gateway technology to other modes of travel :bolian:

'Cuddles' has already been named: 'Ripper', and they didn't find him, he found them. During a jump he wandered into their spore storage.

Ah, good... Maybe you can explain why Cuddles don’t just shroom-jump/sporedrive right out of there? Clearly it’s not an enjoyable situation for him...

DID YOU KNOW THAT HEMP COULD END GLOBAL WARMING AND DRESS EVERYONE ON EARTH IF IT JUST WASNT ILLEGAL?!?!

I’d accept a hemp drive on two conditions.

A: The crew says stuff like “far out” and “groovy” multiple times per episode

And...

B: Every time Lorca needs a word with someone he says “let’s rap”. Also he calls Klingons “them Klingon-cats” and usually refers to Starfleet Command as “tha man”.

I wonder if they'll change Ripper to Ephraim - I'm sure I read somewhere that the idea was for the tardigrade to be a full crewmember from the start, but they changed it. And the character was to be called Ephraim after Johann Ephraim Goeze.

no different than any other made up drive (to varying degree). As long as the stories interesting that's what important to me.

So I'm guessing this drive, which is said to take them anywhere in the galaxy, will be banned because it hurts "Ripper" to use it?

Voyager could get home in one jump. DS9 could have won their war with this technology. We've seen that it works, they'd use it. Or they'd eventually find a workaround - which is a supercomputer beyond their 2256 technology.

So... yep, it's own little continuity.

I'm wondering if it is the predecessor to the Excelsiors failed Transwarp drive. The current version involves using a rare creature (a much enlarged common earth micocreature) almost as a navigation system, and is apparently painful to the creature, which eventually the Feds would ban (if they can even recreate the creature for other ships, which is unknown as of right now). My guess is that the creature cannot be replicated and once it is dead, no more usable spore drive, no more black alert.

Excelsior could have been a attempt to redo the spore drive using the much more powerful computers decades later, but failed due to other reasons.

It's possibly one of the more ludicrous, flakey concepts ever to come up in what is presumably a serious sci-fi show. And I know there's competition for that title.

However I am quite enjoying the moral dilemma it conjures up for Burnham and this tees it up for a nice little battle with the hard headed Captain or most of the other war weary crew members on the ship. So that should be good. I could even see her mutiny again.

The Federation having this technology even if it's banned is a real middle finger to the rest of the franchise and especially makes Voyager a pointless 7 year journey. I was hoping they would never actually use the spore drive but they have now so Pandora's box is open.

How have The Borg for example never used it? it's clearly more effective than Transwarp.

When the spores are all used up and the mushroom creatures are all dead from overuse of the technology by Starfleet, the Grateful Dead Magic Mushroom Drive won't be available to anyone, especially Voyager.

I have a somewhat different take. Since the whole technology seems to depend on a microscopic species of fungal life form existing in subspace, my prediction is that we'll see the whole network obliterated at some point. No fungal network, no spore drive. Whether it gets destroyed accidentally through misuse or intentionally as a form of area denial remains to be seen.
