The Spectre in development as a Fox TV series

From Deadline Hollywood:

Fox has bought The Spectre, a drama series project based on the DC Comics superhero character co-created by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily. Brandon Camp (John Doe) will write the adaptation and executive produce with feature producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino). The Spectre, which has received a script commitment, centers on a former cop serving time in afterlife limbo who hunts down earthly criminals on behalf of the dead — and mortals soon to be dead, if ultimate justice is not served. DC Entertainment’s sister TV studio Warner Bros. TV will produce with Gerber Pictures. The Spectre character first appeared in an 1940 issue of DC’s More Fun Comics. Since then, he has been featured in a number of other DC titles and has headlined his own comic book series. Camp was introduced to The Spectre property by DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns. The project marks Camp’s return to TV and reunion with Fox; he co-created the network’s 2002 mystery drama John Doe. On the feature side, UTA-repped Camp co-wrote and directed the 2009 Jennifer Aniston movie Love Happens. The Spectre also puts Fox back in the comic book adaptation business and reunites the network with DC following their recent collaboration on Human Target.

Hmm, I loved The Spectre short that was part of the DC showcase series, so I will definitely be checking this out. But.... I'm not gonna get my hopes up until I'm actually watching the pilot on my TV with a preview for next week's episode.

Mark Valley for Spectre. Bring in Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley as his cop buddies.

To be honest, I think I would prefer a Spectre movie. Deadman is perfect for TV since it's basically "The Fugitive" with a ghost, but I'd love to see a bigger, weirder, wilder movie version of the Spectre, with him turning people into trees and chopping them down with ghostly chainsaws and such. Just imagine what Del Toro or Peter Jackson could do with The Spectre.

The interesting thing about The Spectre is that you never have to worry about getting stuck with a lead you don't like. Just replace the host!

I would watch that fifty times.

Now, this will be the 100 story tall version with all the powers of God, RIGHT?????

Will it be Jim Corrigan or Crispus Allen?

Will he be chalk white with the green hood and trunks, or just look like a regular guy?

Given that it's TV, the cheaper options are probably the most likely.

I got a feeling it will be Corrigan. I think there is a tendency to go back to the original, classic, or the best known iteration of a character when they take them from page to screen. Granted I don't know enough about Spectre to know if Corrigan or Allen is more popular.

Also, I wonder if Corrigan's backstory might take less amending, if you wanted to remove the Gotham City part of Allen's backstory. Though in Allen's defense, I don't think it would be much of a stretch to just make him a New York cop, for example, instead of a Gotham City cop, if they didn't want to have it connected to Batman.

I have to wonder if they will even use the Spectre's traditional look at all. They might just make him a ghost, with generally the same powers in the comic. That might go over better than having a stark white dude in a green hooded cape. If Corrigan is chosen, I hope that Allen gets a mention or is a supporting character.

Someone on TV needs to take notice of the awesome Ragman concept.
Seconded.

However, with the track record of DC characters not called Kent I'll wait to see this actually on the schedule.

Attempeted and Failed:
Aquaman
Blue Beetle
Wonder Woman

All 3 of those in the last 5 years.

I guess Human Target counts as a win, minorly but until I see Spectre promos on my TV I'm not holding my breath.

"Blue Beetle" wasn't even developed Captain Craig so that doesn't really count. There was no pilot script or offering around like the other two examples. They basically only did test footage and from what I've read they are still interested in developing it. The show was near the top of Geoff Johns "To Do" list from SDCC two years ago. You are also forgetting the proposed "Raven" show and "Grayson" both of which didn't make it through the developmental phase, and the latter was really a pitch.

As for "The Spectre" this would be pretty cool...but it's Fox so I don't see it lasting beyond a pilot.

It may be splitting hairs but I'm inclined to count Blue Beetle. They went so far as to spend money on test footage. Footage designed to encourage execs and/or illicit public attention and support and that didn't happen. Ergo, I'm going to count it.

I agree about Grayson and Raven(which I admit I forgot about this one) which is why I didn't mention those since they were more or less just a pitch idea.

I still think "Mercy Reef" was of decent quality and would have evolved into a pretty cool show. The pilot really did a great job of seeding possible story lines for the series.

Wasn't his inclusion in Smallville also part of an attempt to set up his show?

^ Yes it was originally intended to be a back door pilot. There hasn't been any news on the status of the proposal since the test footage and episode aired though.
