The Soundtrack

They should use an updated remix of the original series' music. With some TOS cues thrown in.

I voted updated remix, but I want to hear lots of TOS cues, too... and I'd like to hear the original theme music over the closing credits... and I really really want to hear the fight music in there somewhere!

I think they should redo Alexander Courage's theme with Limp Bizkit *ducks*

Nah, just kidding :p I'd like to hear an update, but with the Arena fight music intact.

Well, take this into account.

When TMP was made, Goldsmith and Courage worked together, Goldsmith created an altogether new theme and recurring themes, Courage returned to score the 'captains log' scenes, harkening back to classic TOS, but on a mature Enterprise than what we had seen before.

Then we had the James Horner work, who used Courages score and intertwined it with the opening fanfare from the show, that was the ONLY piece that was used from the show, Horner followed that up with an entirely new score, its his job after all, does'nt want to copy goldsmith or courage and creates his own Trek theme. Then after two movies, Leonard Rosenman took over and again, used the trumpet opening but used his own work afterward. Then Goldsmith returned and this time, reworked his theme with courages opening trumpets, which Gene had already asked him to do, with Goldsmith, to score the theme for Next Gen. Then we had ST:VI, well, ill say no more.

Thus creating what we are all familiar with now, where the fanfare starts and either new music follows or TOS theme starts. For some reason, it is just that opening fanfare that has stayed with all the composers, maybe its because it was always used for captains log scenes and scene cuts to the Enterprise.

I'd like to see something like Ottman's soundtrack for "Superman Returns."

It's a solid soundtrack in its own right, but it keeps the original John Williams opening theme and then weaves other familiar tracks in and out of an otherwise original piece of work.

It stands alone, but evokes the emotions and the memories of the past in just enough measure to not be a retread.

Excelent point.

I was actually going to mention this and David Arnolds Bond reworking.

I want new a different. I was this movie to be unique and not have to be bounded by Star Trek that much.

Then why call it Star Trek? When they eventually do a Forbidden Planet remake, I'm sure that'll have all original music. If this movie doesn't evoke memories of the Original Series (to those who have watched it), that's gonna be kinda disappointing for those who expected a Star Trek movie.

At the very least they should include the fanfare. It just wouldn't be Trek without it.

How come some people want a completely new score? I mean where not getting a completely new film, it's based on the original series. If there's going to be some continuity with the series then shouldn't there be some continuity with the music as well?

Why can't it envoke memories of the original but still be it's own movie? I agree, keep the fanfare, but change up the music a bit. The much from the previous trek movies have gotten old and redundant. If this is supposed to bring people back to the trek-verse, than make it almost as unique as possible while still staying true to Trek's roots.

I say let Bear McCreary score the soundtrack. He does such a fantastic job on BSG, he could easily pull off ST XI

So it's okay for people to ditch FP's revolutionary, experimental score, the first full synth score for a Hollywood film... but not okay when it comes to Star Trek?

Hey, Forbbiden Planet is part of my childhood too, ya know. I love it. But I'll accept a new score because it'd be a remake, not the original...

Likewise, as we've had three Star Trek series without a trace of TOS's music in them (DS9, VOY and ENT - TNG used the first parts of the Alexander Courage theme in the title credits), I don't think it's so bad to give us a fresh and new score. If we want Alexander Courage's score, those little bits of paper they called stars and that old model Enterprise sailing through the universe... we've got DVDs.

As you say, it's a remake. If they did a new Forbidden Planet movie, it would probably take a pretty clean slate, in the vein of other movie remakes of single movies; they probably wouldn't try too hard to evoke the feel of the original. So, yeah, not trying to knock FP's soundtrack, but if they did redo that movie, they probably wouldn't make any attempt to bring to memory the music of the original.
This Star Trek movie, however, is not trying to make a clean break, and is very much trying to evoke the original. So it should have at least some of the themes of the original music.

That's not quite true. EVERY series and EVERY movie has had the Star Trek Fanfare appear at least once. If anything that should definitely appear in the movie.

What? Motorhead isn't doing the score? Sheesh. :klingon:

The Bond example is the way to go, I think--a couple of moments to anchor it with the original and let the composer loose on the rest.

Almost entirely new except for the fanfare (without it it would be like bond without the 007 theme or B5 without Franke!

Although maybe it should start with Rocky Horror's Time Warp
