That being said, it's already been announced that a sequel was in the works.

According to IMDB (who really knows how accurate it is) Untitled Star Trek Sequel is listed as announced. It doesn't give who is the director, but JJ Abrams is listed as one of the producers.

A sequel was greenlit several weeks ago shortly after its premiere in Australia, or around that time. Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman have already been commissioned to write the script, they're just waiting for fan feedback and expect to either be starting a rough draft at the end of the year or have it finished by the end of the year.

I actually wouldn't mind if they went "The Dark Knight" route and had a movie that suggested Star Trek, but didn't necessarily have Star Trek in the title.

Then again, I kind of wish Iron Man and others would do that too...
