The Sky's the Limit

how important is this book the st : tng relaunch ? Is it a must read situation ?

I can't speak for everybody, but I don't think it has much to do with the Relaunch. Many (most?) of the stories take place during the original tv series.

The idea was to represent the entire run of TNG, not just the post-movie era.

*I* would say it's a must-read. There were absolutely no stories in the anthology that I didn't absolutely love. It's an incredibly awesome compilation.

As I've said many times, there are no "must read situations" in the novels except in the case of an actual duology or trilogy. We're not trying to confuse people here. Our goal is to make each book (or duology or trilogy) stand on its own as a complete, comprehensible, satisfying story. The continuity among books should be understood simply as a bonus, not a requirement. It provides background that enriches the individual stories, but the goal is for the stories to be satisfying in themselves, not merely to be incomplete fragments of a greater whole.

All of the stories in The Sky's the Limit take place before the conclusion of Nemesis, so there's no overlap with the post-NEM "relaunch." All four of the anniversary anthologies were written to connect only to the shows, not to other books (though stories in a couple of them have been followed up on in later books).

what were the other three anthologies and thank you for the info . and chris I got you 're new bood as preorder on my nook .

all four of the anthologies are not part of the relaunch ? How are they over all ?
Becuase I love anthologies , some of the best stories come out of them .

None of the anthologies are part of the various relaunches. They were issued to celebrate the various anniversaries.

Overall they were very enjoyable. I would recommend getting them.

very cool there all aviable on my Nook . I am currently working on reading the next generation relaunch starting with articles of the federation . just about finished with
it . then onto resistance and Q and A . already read death in winter and death before dishonor . I can'nt belive they killed janeway off like that . not sure where to go after that .

^ Just a warning: the Nook version (and all e-book versions, apparently) of Distant Shores, the VOY anthology, are missing a couple stories. You'll want to get that in print.

Wow, someone pulled some serious necromancy on this thread.

This was a fantastic anthology; usually there's only three or four gems in an anthology this large, but it was quite the reverse here.

I really miss Tasha Yar, so I particularly enjoyed "Acts of Compassion", especially since we didn't get to see much interaction between Yar and Crusher in S1.

"Thinking of You" was hilarious; Greg nailed Lwaxana and Barclay, though didn't poor Barclay have enough issues without adding telepaths? :p

"Twould Ring the Bells of Heaven" was the type of story I'd have liked to see in S7; after Troi passed the Bridge Officer's Test they never really did anything with that. It was late in the season, but it certainly would have been better than "Genesis" or "Eye of the Beholder".

"Friends with the Sparrows" was an excellent story, though while I appreciate Christopher's efforts to make the Tamarian language make some sort of sense, I still don't get it. I get it more than I did before, so that's something. And it was a good continuation of Data dealing with his emotions; something that I wish they'd had time to explore more on screen, but with movies, there's really not much time.

KRAD's "Four Lights" was honestly rather disappointing; this really didn't feel like Picard at all and the story just didn't feel complete. It all felt very rushed and chaotic. I guess everyone has an off day at some point, though!

"'Til Death" was another disappointing story; everything was great until the ending. It felt like a complete cheat, considering how despairing Crusher was of recovering Riker's heart from the transporter gun. Fabrini medical tech was good, but it was used more as a magic fix than a scientific one here.

All-in-all though, it's an anthology well worth reading...and re-reading.

it also says it's 240 pg book now is any of this right or is it missing some things?

What I liked about some books/anthologies is that fill in facts/stories that in the end enhance my movie experience. Was that the case with some of those movie era stories in this book or the pre-Farpoint story? Did they fill in some of the blanks or expand on throwaway lines in the movies and made those lines more relevant/cool? Did some of the TV era stories elaborate on or set-up some of the cooler TV TNG episodes? I'm just curious about how "connected" these anthology stories were to the TV/movie goingson canon.
Speaking only for my own story, like Greg, I did mine when Marco approached me with gaps that were missing from the extant stories -- specifically a) there was no Picard story and b) there was no Dominion War-era story. I thought a sequel to "Chain of Command" was called for.

(Turbo, sorry you were disappointed.....)

kieth I loved articles of the federation are you planning a sequal to it any time soon?

very west wing

What people have been saying is that they'll click on the link to the story in the table of contents, and only the About The Author page will be there, no story. So, check each one to make sure it's actually in the book, not just the table of contents.

okay I did that and I see what you mean . Are all the star trek anthologies like that ?
and that is including myriad universe , mirrror universe ,sce and so forth.
