The Six Companions

I'd put Mickey and Rory in Man of Action before Klutz. I've never seen anything to suggest either character was a Klutz. I'd actually put them in a 7th category "The Boyfriend" first. That or since "the Klutz" appears to be populated only by male companions, maybe come up with another name altogether. I'd also say change "Man of Action" to "Companion of Action" so we can get Sara Kingdom, Lady Christina and Adelaide Brooke in there, though Christina would qualify as "Shady Character", as would River.

Alex
Kultz could always be relabeled, as Mickey pointed out his role in School Days, "The Tin Dog" category ;)

Can you think of any other Broad categories of which to create a Companion character template from, which wouldn't end up being classified in any of the six existing arche-types?

Yes and no. I mean, the Doctor himself is a Shady Brainy Action Klutz, so his Companions are just reflections of who he is, and the Ingenues are there to ask questions and underline how brilliant he is.

But we could imagine all kinds of different companions that don't really fit any of these archetypes: the Smooth Talker, the Pessimist, the Wife, the Messiah, and probably many others.

Klutz is accurate enough for Mickey, especially when you watch Boomtown and see him trip over the janitor's cart, and later meets up with everyone with a bucket jammed on his foot.

True, by the end of the RTD era he'd become an undeniable man of action, I still think Klutz is an accurate term for the character when he was introduced.

Rory on the otherhand, he was more of a human doormat before being turned into an awesome asskicking Roman Centurion.

To be fair, though, all Rory had to do was protect an invincible box. Which isn't the hardest of tasks.

I'd also put Leela in the companion of action category. She did most of the fight sequences while on the show.
