I don't know. TOS was full of stunning yeoman in short skirts reporting to the bridge and none of them ever made a point of mentioning their oaths of celibacy to the captain. If you don't know that she's supposed to be some kind of super-sexual alien (and I don't recall this ever being discussed in the film), wouldn't you find it odd that this particular Star Trek sex symbol had to take some sort of oath, as opposed to all the glamorous guest-stars on the original series?

You know, I've never thought about this particular scene too much until this thread. I suppose when I've watched this film in the past, I thought she must give off some excess pheromones or something, making her irresistible. That's why all of the crew break their necks to get a glimpse of her when she walks on the bridge. I mean, she was beautiful, but as Greg said, beautiful women were a dime a dozen on the Enterprise. But, also as Greg said, there was never any payoff for that line (which is what I've never thought about before now). You'd expect to see officers drooling as she walked through the corridors. Although, it might explain why V'ger found her to be an irresistible choice. Perhaps V'ger could "detect" her extraordinary attractiveness somehow? LOL

The 'Oath of celibacy' line was the payoff line. Remember, when Uhura first announces that Ilia is on her way to the bridge, she turns to Kirk and says profoundly, "She's... Deltan, Captain." and everyone, or at least the men, sit up a little straighter as Kirk responds, "Understood."

And some people think Trek TOS is "dated"? Nothing dates faster than contemporary slang and colloquialisms -- especially in a show that's supposed to take place centuries in the future.

"Freakasaurus" is hardly an example of contemporary slang or colloquialism. I sincerely doubt that it was ever uttered by anyone outside of Star Trek. Ever.

And you'd be wrong. Because I know a lot of people that said it back in the late 80s and early 90s.

Which reminds me of:

Both make me cringe, Data's more so than Spock's, but not by much.

I liked "Buckle up!". The way it was said during the quick clip of it in the trailer made it appear to me like Kirk was giving Spock a high-five while saying it. Of course, now I know he was clapping McCoy on the shoulder purposely too hard to irritate him (while referencing the earlier line in the film). But the facts do not change that to me, Kirk and Spock were excited and prepared for this movie and I should be too.

Far be it from me to defend Voyager, but there's nothing wrong with using a word like "freakasaurus" within the episode's context--the crew was visiting the year 1996. In such a case, slang that grounds the episode within that year is perfectly appropriate.

They weren't Deltan. Seriously, look at the reaction of the crew to her species being mentioned, and her stepping onto the bridge. Chekov almost has a seizure.

I'm too lazy to read the whole thread to see if this has been mentioned, and I think it is from The Wounded. It is during the O'Briens' mealtime. The ship is hit by weapons, and O'Brien reacts by looking concerned, and noting 'something's wrong'.

Every time I see it, I want to shout 'well, duh!' at him.
