The Simpsons no longer coming to DVD

Best idea would be for them to make a deal with Netflix.

+1

Absolutely. I ain't spending money on a Simpsons DVD collection, believe you me.

Yep, even better if new seasons go directly to Netflix with a bit of a delay after they appear on the channel.

Netflix is generally a great way to revisit a series or plunge into one that one hasn't had a chance to check out the first time around. I think they'd generate a lot of goodwill.

Families without a lot of money still don't necessarily have HD though, right?

I suppose they would mostly pay for Netflix.

Families without a lot of money steal a foot ball off someone elses roof for entertainment.

Remember stickball?

Although the real poor who do not see that much difference between now and 1974 do not have the resources to pirate as much as they do not have the resources to legally stream media, because they're still living in neighbourhoods where they're renting video tape for special occasions when they feel like splurging.

;)

I'm talking out of my ass.

It depends. You can buy a decent 32" HDTV for about $175. I got mine (32" Hisense H3 HDTV) as a late Christmas present, and I think it was only $158 (I love it very much). A Roku box/Roku Stick is about $40, so for about $200-$225, you can have all the HD equipment you need to enjoy movies.

So, yeah, getting Netflix for $9 a month would be the cheapest way to have access to lots of HD content.

When you start stealing cable there's no way to stop stealing cable without getting a foot up your ass.

40 years later, someone gets uppity and your building is blacklisted.

I already own the first ten seasons on DVD. Those are all I'm interested in.

I have NO real interest in HD tbh. *shrug* It's overrated imo.

And I like having copies of shows I like to watch. Not a fan of streaming them via digital.

FXX has every episode of The Simpsons, but while there are a lot of other series via their streaming service, they're very incomplete, so I'm not sure what they plan to do.
Ah. Hopefully they won't be moving everything over to just digital. At least not any time soon.

I've been the buying the Simpsons DVDs since 2003, so this is a shame for me. But I actually stopped watching new episodes around Season 14, so the recent s14-17 DVDs have been the first time I've even seen a lot of those episodes.

So yeah, all the classic seasons (IMO) are out so I'm not really bothered. Whatever season it was when it switched to widescreen it really went downhill (again, IMO, everyone seems to have a different opinion of when the show lost its way)

But even if the episodes weren't as good as they used to be, the commentaries were always still worth a listen to.

All the good seasons have already been released anyway. No big deal.

But this also means that they are not rereleasing old "good" serieses for the new adults who weren't able to commit to this product during it's original release.

Think of the dumb bastards 40 years from now who wish they could still buy the Simpsons season 3 on DVD but just fricking can't?

I agree. Besides HDTV's being ridiculously expensive (anything over $30-50 for a TV is ridiculous, and unaffordable for my family anyway), I've never seen any difference the few times I've seen HD stuff on someone's HDTV. I'm fine with SD, and there are so many cheap, used SDTVs that they're easily replaceable, and from what I've seen generally more sturdy than HDTVs anyway.

I also love physical media, and will never give it up for something you can only stream, or only have a digital copy (probably non transferable) that could be deleted or taken from you or the device its on if the device is gone.

As for the Simpson's announcement, I'm not surprised. I can't imagine newer DVD seasons of The Simpson's are very popular or selling very well.

I don't understand how anyone can buy physical media but won't spend over $50 on a TV. Was that a typo?

I wish you could just download a movie or show digitally without DRM attached. I'd be much more inclined to purchase if that was the case. Though I suppose that'd make it even easier to pirate for all the entitled brats who won't even spend a dollar on a phone app.

I'd like to know what you were watching for the last 60+ years of TV that a TV didn't cost over $50. Was it a 6 inch TV or something?

4K is over-rated, and apparently a lot of companies that tried to push their 4KTV's last year with the world cup have found out people want a 1080p TV for an affordable price, not a huge-ass expensive 4K tv...
Though now they try pushing those curved screens, no use what-so-ever...

I got a 50" 4K TV for $700. I paid more than that for my first 32" 720p LCD back in 2006. It is a very nice TV, even when using it for 1080p material.

Buying 4K today is future-proofing, plain and simple, just like FHD was in 2006. There is nothing to "overrate" - it's early adoption.

HD is definitely a better experience but it's not crucial for a show like The Simpsons.

You could probably get a decent 32" HD TV for only a couple hundred now. If you can afford to buy up a series on DVD you can afford that. But, last time I checked broadcast HD had trouble even coming in on converter boxes, so I don't know if it's currently possible to get decent HD without cable.

I agree that I like having a permanent physical copy that can't be licensed out from under me. But I'd be happy with being able to buy a digital copy and burn it onto a disc.

Let's separate a couple of things:

1) You don't see the need for HD - fair enough

2) You cannot tell the difference between SD and HD content - get your eyes tested.
