"The Shadow" lurks at 20th Century Fox

I still haven't seen the 1994 movie, but if they set this one in modern day, I won't be going to see it in theatres. Maybe rent it later, but no way I'm shelling out the price of a theatre ticket to see the Shadow in any other period than the 30s/40s.
Absolutely. The Shadow must be in the 30s or 40s.

Recent word on The Shadow is that Raimi thinks the script is in great shape and is good to go. It's reportedly a very dark script, with a lot of gore

Boo!

and nudity.
Yay!
Heh. :rommie:

Although, in truth, the Shadow was no stranger to gore....

Count me in for another Shadow movie, even the flawed Baldwin movie was a lot of fun.

I doubt the new movie will have nearly as good a score as Jerry Goldsmith's 94' score sadly.:(
It was Goldsmith's? I knew it was excellent, now I know why.
).

I love that soundtrack, too. In fact, I think I'm going to put it on now . . . .

Jerry Goldsmith's score was fantastic. He created a really memorable theme for The Shadow. I literally put the opening credits music on as I popped back in this thread. :techman:

If you ever rent the 1994 film, you may be annoyed to find that it's pan-and-scan. Universal has never bothered to release a proper widescreen version for R1.
Yuck. Thanks for the tip.

I didn't know that either. That really sucks becasue I was thinking about watching it again. I really hate pan and scan.

Darn, Fox will Fuck this movie. We get a Twilight director instead of Sam Raimi. I was really looking forward to this movie being finally made. Now, fuck it, I can't be bothered.

^ Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night are like Twilight? You sure about that?

Exactly. I don't think directing one TWILIGHT movie contaminates you forever.

Good directors can handle different tones and genres.

Remember, before IRON MAN, Jon Favreau's major claim to fame was ELF. And I still remember comic book fans having heart attacks because the director of PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE was going to do BATMAN . . . . .

Also, I keep on hearing that David Slade is trying to make a legitimate horror movie with the third Twilight movie. Of course, we'll see how much of that translates to the final cut, since I'm sure the studio will want the film to satisfy the huge mass of die-hard fans wanting to see two hours of Edward and Bella ogling each other, but I'm at least intrigued that Slade is attempting something fresh and new with the film.

Didn't care for the Alec Baldwin version. He was miscast -- didn't have the right voice for the character at all, and his laugh was pathetic. It didn't sound menacing and scary, just hysterical. And the makeup to transform his face was rather silly.

Now, you want to hear a vocal performance that's perfect for the Shadow, check out Kiefer Sutherland as the bad guy in Phone Booth, a role that's almost entirely voiceover. It reminded me a lot of Orson Welles's definitive performance as the Shadow on radio, and featured a really great menacing laugh. I'd like to see (or rather hear) Sutherland get the role.

You go to a Shadow movie for nudity?!?!?

Well, Margo, not Lamont.

Enjoyed the 1994 one as well, but which actor do you think could pull it off. At this rate they'll just remake The Phantom, The Rockateer and Dick Tracy.

The Shadow knows...hahahahaha! I'm in for this! Was wondering what studio would go for this and the director choice is interesting. I'm a big fan of the 1994 Shadow (gods was it that long ago?). At the time I always thought that Alec Baldwin would have made a good Batman/Bruce Wayne.

You would think someone would get a Defenders of the Earth franchise going, instead of all these low budget Phantom movies and supposed Mandrake films. I like The Shadow with Baldwin, but yes it could be better.

I don't see why. The Phantom, Mandrake, and Flash Gordon have existed as separate characters for over 70 years. Defenders of the Earth was a mediocre TV cartoon that lasted all of one season back in the mid-'80s. You're talking as though it's somehow the inevitable or natural format for these characters, and that makes no sense at all.

I loved the '94 flick. It wasn't perfect, but it was a lot of fun.

I look forward to more of the '30s pulp heroes being turned into movies. I just hope they don't take the "updating" direction like "Syfy" (gag!!!) did with Flash Gordon, or with that new Phantom production.

I want my pulps AS my pulps.
