The score has really grown on me!

When I first saw STXI in theaters I really didn't even notice the score much, but upon repeated viewings of the DVD the score has really grown on me, especially "Enterprising Young Men".

I might even have to admit it rivals the Star Wars theme for my favorite movie score.

Anyone else experience this?

Me too, buddy. First time I heard it, it didn't get much impression. But, after some viewing of the movie and the Blu-ray documentaries, the score grew up on me. unfortunately, the music on the cd contains less than a half of the total score. it's a shame. maybe, in a couple of months (hopefully), we'll get a nice bootleg for this score.

Most. Awesome. Score. In a LONG time!!!

Up there with "Superman", "The Magnificent Seven", "Jurrasic Park", and the other giants!

Supposedly, Michael Giacchino suggested that there may be a release of the expanded score some time soon. Apparently he was not pleased with the short CD presentation either.

Wow! I hope you're right. It was a great score and like abaldwin360, I too love "Enterprising Young Men". I'm anxiously awaiting his what his score will sound like for "Star Trek XII." I'm sure we'll be hearing more of the Alexander Courage theme as well!

Theres another cd comming out?! I hope so I loved the soundtrack thought it was short on cd. I do hope there will be another released, I know for sure they did with other movies, so why not this one? I know James Horner who composed music for a lot movies including some Star Trek films and even Titanic. There were two cd's relased for the soundtrack of Titanic, which is pretty great, I hope Micheal Giacchino does the same for this movie. If there is another cd released, I will be buying it!:bolian:

I didn't even BUY the short one yet (never happened to see it at Wal-Mart...)--so this is AWESOME news for me.

I heard the CD before I saw the movie, so I had a chance to appreciate it on its own merit. I very much like it and will also get an expanded CD if it becomes available. I put the CD on my computer and listen to it often.
I agree the DVD feature was too short. I found myself wishing JJ had not shown up to interrupt!

As a professional horn player, I was delighted to hear the opening theme being played by the French horns. For those who care, it starts on a D. The final glissando leading in to the Kelvin's scene ends on an F#.

Yeah, the music doc on the Blu-ray/DVD was extremely disappointing. The only disappointment, really.

What struck me about the main score is how it fit so in well with the tragic and pessimistic mood established at the opening of the movie, yet in the closing credits, it was bright, full, and exuding confidence. I wouldn't mind hearing it open the next movie.
Now, Abrams just has to write some lyrics to it. ;)

VERY nice to meet you! I'm a bit of a french horn junkie. I can never get enough of the FH. My son played it in HS and college and we bought a horn from Stewart Rose (FH player for the NYC Opera, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and St Lukes, among others. He was the most down to earth, nicest guy you'd ever want to meet!

I'm so glad you posted!!!

And yes, when i first heard the score i wasn't thrilled, but boy has it grown on me. I totally love it now and do wish they'd put out a more completed cd of the music. Enterprising Young Men is awesome and Labor of Love STILL makes me cry!

Michael Giacchino has stated at a couple of events that though nothing is set in stone, they are working on a "Vol. 2" release containing wither more from the score, or the rest of the score.

He's also stated that it is likely to be all new (unreleased) material.

There is nothing official though, so it may not even happen, but the intent and effort are there.

I would love to have some of the unreleased cues on CD:

- The cue starting when Captain Robau is told to come to the Narada for negotiations, and the Kelvin shuttle going over.
- The sequence where the Cadets assemble in the hangar, and Uhura complains she's assigned to the Farragut, and McCoy injects Kirk with the vaccine.
- Pike briefing Kirk, Sulu and Olsen on the plan to shut down the drill right the way to the drop, as Pike says "good luck".
- The fight on the drill platform with Sulu's hero shot. (one of the best action cues of the movie).
- Kirk diving after Sulu and they both loose their parachutes.
- Spock rescuing the Vulcan Council from the Katric Ark.
- The Lament for Vulcan, and Spock stating that he is now part of an endangered species.
- The torture/Nero Backstory scene, with the unreleased use of the Erhu for Nero's theme. (to hint musically at the Vulcan/Romulan shared ancestry)
- The monster chase music on Delta Vega.
- The Mysterious music as Kirk and Spock enter the outpost.
- The music as Spock Prime says Live Long and Prosper and Kirk and Scotty are beamed to the Enterprise.
- The Scotty in the pipe's chase.
- The "Come with me - Cuipcake" piece for Scotty and Kirk rushing through Engineering.
- The Enterprise rising from Titan (one of my favorite moments in the movie) through to Kirk and Spock beaming aboard the Narada.
- The brief cue for the Enterprise being pulled into the Black Hole, then ejecting the Warp Core(s).

There is so much good material that deserves to be released here :)

Looking forward to it happening!

Some of the film's BEST musical moments. Seconded! :techman:

If I'm not mistaken, that's the same pitch relation between first note and last note as is found in one iteration of the the Original Series fanfare. If you were to begin that fanfare on D, you'd have (sketched crudely, I'm afraid, but it should be sufficient to get the point across):

|D..GC..... B. GEA|D... ... DF#
|1... 2... 3... 4....|1... 2... 3

From beginning to end, it rises one octave plus a major third. Would the same be true of that final upward glissando?

Also interesting is that the movie score's recurring 17-note melodic motif, being set in the key of D minor, does not contain an F-sharp, nor does any of its supporting harmony. (Nice use of the Neapolitan in the fifth and sixth bars leading to the dominant, though! :) )

The movie's music is catchy, but I've heard better. Personally, I'll take the score from The Doomsday Machine over "Enterprising Young Men" any day.

Seconded!:)

I would also like the film version of the moment when the Enterprise warps in to destroy the missiles before they hit the Jellyfish, the choir-only version of Nero Fiddles, and the film version of the end of New Car Smell. I know a lot of this is tracked or remixed and not likely to get a release, but one can wish.;)

And the moment when the Enterprise warps in is almost certainly one of the last-minute re-scored sequences Giacchino talked about, not a tracked segment.
