The Safest Place In America

Setting aside some notable exceptions (Compton, Detroit, East St. Louis) you're not likely to visit anywhere in the US that will pose any significant danger to you beyond what you experience in your home town.

You don't know, IAL is from the North, where ferrets leap from people's trousers and viciously attack at a moments notice, and swarthy groups of flat-capped men lurk around every dark alleyway corner where they compete to regale you with stories of their troubled destitute childhoods and subject you to close harmony singing.

Tis a scary place.

What's the safest place in America to have a holiday?

Weird question. Pretty much anywhere really. Lived here all my life and never had a single crime happen against me in all 4 decades. Sure, yeah, there are a few inner city areas that can be dangerous but there are no tourist destinations there!

Oh, and we don't do the culture thing here so don't come looking for culture!

Yes we do! But with culture, we're like some Asian countries are with technology - we take the good stuff other countries have come up with and make it better in some ways while also cheapening it. ;)

Are you for real IAL? When planning out a vacation that's the last thing I'd could ever imagine considering. Obviously I'm not planning to go to Baghdad anytime soon, but beyond that, just find something you like and go visit it.

When traveling, a little common sense goes a long way. If you don't go looking for trouble, it probably won't find you.

Yup, that's what we're like. Apart from the close harmony singing.

The town of Colonie in Albany County, New York.

The town was rated the safest place in the US based on our 54 violent crimes (pop. 90,000) in 2008 (the most recent year for available data).

I'm afraid there isn't anything touristy to do there, but there is a lovely town park, lots and lots and lots and lots of places to shop and plenty of movie theaters.

And if you want to take your chances, you can visit the state Capitol in Albany (rated 300th among the safest places to live in the US in 2008).

The logical answer is Washington DC. DC is where the President lives, ergo, it's where the Secret Service is based. Ergo, they have guns and are trained to use them.

The REAL answer is, safe, is an illusion.

The secret service defends and protects the president and other officials they're assigned too, not regular citizens or tourists.

Yes I'm aware of that, which is why I said it wasn't the real answer.

As others have already said, the U.S. is way too big to just narrow down one place to visit. The country is so vast and there are so many different regions and climates. I'd say, figure out what part of the country you think you'd like to see (west coast, east coast, northeast, southwest, mid-west, whatever) and then choose your locale from there.
