The Runaways (Marvel/Hulu)

The MCU continues to expand with the announcement that cult-favorite The Runaways is coming to Hulu!

The Runaways is the story of six young Los Angeles children who discover that their parents are actually diabolical super-villains, and in order to get away from them they (wait for it)... they run away!
"Marvel’s Runaways" is Executive Produced by series Co-Showrunners/writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage ("The O.C.”, “Gossip Girl") along with Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” “Marvel’s Luke Cage”) and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s Daredevil,” “Marvel’s Jessica Jones.”) "Fake Empire's" Lis Rowinski will produce as well. "Marvel's Runaways" is a co-production with ABC Signature Studios.

For the record, Tina Minoru, mother of Runaway Nico Minoru, recently appeared in the MCU Dr. Strange prequel comic.

Damn, they just announced Hulu is going paid subscription only and I don'the want to add another paid service. I'll be eagerly awaiting the Blu-Ray release though, because I just read the first collection of the first series and I loved it. I'm kind of surprised they didn't do it on Freeform, this seems perfect for it and I thought it was even rumored for ABC Family at one point.

Hulu does still offer the free trial week.

Yeah, I think I would have preferred Freeform as well (despite having Hulu) just because a cross-over with Cloak and Dagger would be a natural. Not that it can't still happen (See Supergirl/Flash), but it would be more likely on the same network.

Runaways have been talked about for a long time. I'm happy that this will force me to read it sooner (it's been on my list of things to read for years). I'm slightly sad that it's on Hulu because I'm not currently paying for it. I'm already on the fence about CBS's subscription service and this is just another thing to add.

So, The Runaways was an awesome comic, and the characters are great. But, the show is being done by someone whose big credits are "The OC" and "Gossip Girl", which is not good. Talk about a mixed bag. Still, I'll stay hopeful that it will be good. It will be nice to give Netflix's Marvel shows a little competition, they've been getting kind of samey in my opinion so maybe this will get them to shake it up a bit.

Wonder what took them so long?

Though tbf, always thought would work better as TV series than movie.

I know of Runaways In Name Only, never read the series. While I'm glad to see that Marvel Television is spreading across many platforms I won't be adding Hulu to my list of services. Like JD I'll just wait for it on DVD or even Netflix via DVD some time down the calendar(s).

I also understand Cloak & Dagger to still be a green lighted to series project on Freeform. I've not heard any casting so I'm guessing it's maybe a mid-season or Spring '17 debut most likely at this point?

Have Cloak & Dagger ever teamed up with the Runaways in the comics? I know Runaways kind of merged with Young Avengers, but I don't think I've heard about them teaming up with Cloak & Dagger. Not that it can't happen in the TV shows either way, I was just curious.

Yeah, they showed up in the Runaways comic. I won't say the context because that would be spoilers for the comic obviously, but Clock & Dagger definitely met the Runaways.

I haven't read comics in years but Cloak and Dagger never seemed to be able to carry more than a dozen issues or so in any title they headlined. Still, seems it could make good fodder for a series if done well.

This is actually Dr Strange news, and it hasn't been officially confirmed yet, so grain of salt and all that. But, if true it may actually be of greater relevance to Runaways than to Dr. Strange.

An actress named Linda Louise Dyan has posted on her web page that she has been cast as Tina Minoru in the Dr Strange movie. Tina, of course, is the mother of Runaway Nico Minoru.

If true, and if Runaways ever does see the light of day, the character of Tina will have an important role to play.

Tamara Becher, a writer from the Iron Fist series as well as Warehouse 13, Covert Affairs and Buffy the Vampire Slayer...
She's listed as "Miscellaneous Crew" on IMDB under Buffy. Whatever that means. I thought I didn't recognise her name from any of the show's writers

I'm not sure how your logic follows there. How will having her mother being an established character make her role any more important than if she wasn't?

That aside, I'm sure most if not all of the characters on the show will have their villainous parents established on-screen, even if just in passing on another show or movie. It's kind of the whole premise, really.

If my exhaustive 20 seconds of googling is correct, this is her in a short movie, also playing a magical girl called Tina.

Assuming for a second that this is legit, given her apparent age it seems likely that she'd appear in some flashback. I mean Nico is supposed to be what? 16? 17 in the comics? That means you'd expect her mum to at least be in her mid-30's.

So she probably won't be Tina in the show if it ever materialises, except in even more flashbacks. Admittedly, such flashbacks are in the comics so it's far from impossible.
