The Rude Holodeck

I'm sorry it's been a while since I've watched TNG but I seem to remember a couple of times that the holdeck would insult a crewmember.
I think in the first Dixon Hill epsiode, I think it's called The Big Goodbye and it mocked Data's skin color (through a character of course)and a ploice officer called Dr Crusher "one hep broad".
I'm saying there's anything wrong with it...I just found it funny that a 24th century mega-computer would come up with zingers for it's pwn crew like that.

Those instances aren't coming to my mind immediately, but it isn't illogical in that the personalities of the characters would have said those things. For example, an 18th century character was programmed to act just like that he/she would in real life, which, in real life, might have included reacting strangely to someone who looked out of place.

Considering how often the holodeck 'malfunctions' maybe the Enterprise is a little sadistic.

Either that, or it's getting it's own back at the crew.

"Oh, blow out my primary capacitors to do your technobabble solution for another problem? I'm soooo gonna make sure you get holo-cocked blocked next time your running your 'program', Geordi."

The actions within the program were consistent with Dixon Hill stories. I think its funny that ya are focussin' on Data & Crusher when Picard got punched in the mouth by a holo-character & the ship's historian was shot durin' the same episode.

Or, lookin' at it from another perspective, in that same episode, the Jaradda probe had an effect on the active holodeck program. The way the holocharacters acted in the program may have been an unexpected side effect, like them not bein' able to leave the program.

That would have been a great idea for an episode. The Enterprise logs the daily lives of all the crew members and civilians on board; it knows where they are at all times, and everything about them, down to their most intimate habits. Ostensibly, each one of the emergent intelligences of a holodeck creation has access to this information, and could be influenced by it.

Calling Dr. Crusher a 'hep broad' was a compliment, and meant that way. It meant she was styling in her outfit. Which she was.

The thing that got my attention was when Data (in The Outrageous Okona) asked the computer (directly - not in the guise of a character) who was the funniest comedian and the computer responded with some guy who specialized in making humor about quantum physics. Was the computer snowing Data? It sure seems like it.

The computer has no self-awareness (note the comment made when Data's "grandfather" downloaded his memories into the Enterprise computer), so it didn't give a personal opinion. It would have drawn from comments on record by humans regarding comics and humorists.

But that makes no sense. The funniest comic was one who's humor was about quantum physics? Doubtful. The majority of people wouldn't even get his jokes, let alone think they were funny.

A sophisticated AI need not be self-aware to act or appear that way.

The thing in The Schizoid Man is somewhat contradicted in several episodes:

1. The consciousness of the expanded Barclay occupies the computer in The Nth Degree.

2. Moriarity was created by the computer.

3. A lifeform was born in the computer in Emergence.

4. The consciousness of Sisko, Dax, Kira and O'Brien was temporarily stored in DS9's computer in Our Man, Bashir.
