The Romulan War dedication page

For Majel Barrett Roddenberry (1932-2008), a grand lady who left us far too soon.

For Tim Dechristopher, an "auction hero" whose singular act of courage confounded the (thankfully defunct) Bush Administration's unconscionable eleventh-hour attempt to despoil vast tracts of Utah public land.

And for Sergeant Matthis Chiroux, a warrior of conscience who drew from the terrors of war the determination and grace to work for the ideals of peace.

That's IT? That set somebody off so much that they defaced the book and flushed part of it? What. The. Fuck? Are you kidding? There are not enough  in the world.

If this is the worst thing I ever do, I'd say I'm not that bad of a guy. Yes, I overreacted, but I wouldn't say I defaced the book. I actually made sure I got ever little piece of the page after so it still looks nice. :)

Anyway, just so you know, when I read the name of a certain facility half way down page 26, I just shook my head and laughed. The dude wrote the book, so he can throw in whatever political references he wants, no matter how ridiculous I think they may be.

BTW, my distaste for his dedication in Last Full Measure had nothing to with Casey Sheehan (God bless him) or even Martin's opinion on the war. It was his dedication to Cindy Sheehan. (Semper Invictus? Talk about tarnishing a Marine staple.) I found the woman disgusting, as did her entire family who disowned her. I can't relate to a woman who has lost her son, but I found her actions truly grotesque and self-distructive...for her personally and for us as Americans. The ultimate was her rubbing elbows with Hugo Chavez (who still wants our country to burn in hell even though our current president went out of his way to shake his hand and act like they were long lost brothers). Yeah...that's a chick I want to associate with.

All this aside, I am thoroughly enjoying the book. Excellent work and very entertaining. Regardless of how I feel about his political views he feels he must throw in his works--it's just not good to mix politics with anything--he has a handle on Enterprise better than the creaters did and equal to Manny Coto, and is commanding ths relaunch exceptionally.

it's just not good to mix politics with anything

Says the guy who starts a whole thread just so he can express his own political opinions in a hostile and inflammatory way. Amazing how it's only "politics" when the other guy does it. What you're really saying is that you don't think people should have the right to express political views you disagree with.

...I tore the page out of the book, crumpled it up, and flushed it down the toilet.

Yes, I overreacted, but I wouldn't say I defaced the book.

If that isn't defacing a book I'm wondering what would be. Book burning maybe?

To deface means, "to mar the appearance of." My book looks brand new. In fact, I make sure not to crease the spine when reading so they look brand new afterwards when on my bookshelf. As I said, I took ever speck of paper out so it would appear as nice as it did when I got it...regardless of whether I wish I hadn't done so later.

For my money, Cindy Sheehan is a woman with understandable motives who took it a bit too far. She's rather obviously not someone with a strong political mind -- if she were, she'd know better than to associate with President Chávez. She rightly identified the Iraq War as an illegal war of aggression justified by lies, and did everything she knew how to do to fight it. But to her, Bush=Pure Evil, so anything she did to undermine him was therefore justified -- which is itself an absurd argument. I agree that President Bush is a war criminal, but that doesn't mean associating with President Chávez is therefore okay.

As for President Chávez -- bear in mind that it's something of an exaggeration to say that he wants to see America burn. He wants no such thing. He wants the United States to abandon its imperialist tendencies in Latin America -- the man is a strong proponent of Latin American sovereignty. He also wants to find a way to mobilize the poor and working class into a powerful and politically active voting bloc... that supports him. And he wants the United States to continue to exist and be militarily powerful so that he can have a boogeyman he can point to and blame Venezuela's problems on. He's a complex individual with a very unique set of political goals, but he's not someone who's out to destroy the United States. Just its reputation.

I found the woman disgusting, as did her entire family who disowned her.

Uh, wrong. Cindy's ex-sister-in-law wrote an email to Matt Drudge stating that she and HER relatives disavowed Cindy's actions, but no names were signed. As far as Cindy's own family members, all evidence indicates that they fully support her.

I can't relate to a woman who has lost her son,

...and yet that hasn't tempered your condemnation of her.

but I found her actions truly grotesque and self-distructive...for her personally and for us as Americans.

Because she had the audacity to criticize the president and his policies... which, incidentally, is what Fox News does pretty much 24/7 these days. Are they just as "grotesque" to you?

No, No Fox News is not criticizing, they are pointing out why Republicans do it better and it is even better when they got amnesia last year.

Dude, I don't know what fabricated news source you get your information from, but that is absolutely false. Perhaps it was the Obama Network, aka MSNBC?

Fox News tells it like it is. They have the White House running scared and they should. Check out the latest polls. Some people are actually coming around and realizing what some of us have known for quite some time.

And please...don't package me up with Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. I think both of those individuals are mentally disturbed and are an embarassment to the people they supposedly represent.

Might I humbly suggest we're getting off-topic and drifting towards a discussion more appropriate for TNZ?

Yeah...Captain59, I agree with your overall sentiments, but--frankly, the "over-reaction" (which, BTW, I found understandable, don't get me wrong) was just asking for a backlash from the...shall we say...less conservative posters?

Myself...I'd be all too happy to dedicate a novel of mine to Joe "You LIE!" Wilson--just to make a point on IDIC and free speech.

It would be interesting to see what the BBS reaction is there....

I agree that President Bush is a war criminal, but that doesn't mean associating with President Chávez is therefore okay.

Since we're straying way out in Left field on this thread, can't really let this one go without comment; WarCriminal Bush? Lets see - War with Iraq - authorized by Congress who had access to same intel the President was using; war started after issuing 47? UN resolutions which Saddam chose to wipe his arse with rather than comply; yellowcake found in Iraq post invasion. Missles found in iraq, post invasion. Plans for building nuclear devices found buried in garden in Iraq, post invasion. Bases for training terrorists against the US and other Western nations supported and promoted in Iraq - found and destroyed post invasion (done easily since we knew where they were already operating).

This has absolutely nothing to do with Trek - the Left leanings of many of its authors are annoying as all get out as I come across them, but they've got the right t say it, as long as we continue to be willing to buy it, and I'm used to skimming past the tripe when I see it in the NYT, MSNBC, CBS, radio etc. Seeing a slap at Bush in the credits (now thankfully defunct...) makes me roll my eyes and move on -- although now that I think about it, Kirsten Beyer missed a great chance to call out the inspiration of the Collective in Unworthy within the Obama administration ("everybody just keep doing what you're doing and ignore all those people talking to you out there outside of your own little world...!"), or perhaps that wasn't her intent and I'm just seeing a little art imitate reality.

Ripping the page was over the top, and the guy admits he overracted. If only the Anti-Bush "he's a War Criminal!!!" crowd could come to a similar sense of undertanding as quickly..

Authors are allowed to dedicate their books to whomever they wish.

Who's Joe Wilson? Don't worry, I'll go look him up, like I did Cindy. Won't affect me buying a ST book.

I hate closing threads, but I think this one is definitely done, so I'm closing it.

If anyone has a good reason for this thread to stay open, please PM me.
