The Rocketeer sequel in development

With all this talk of MCU does Disney have the rights to the Rocketeer? I would think with Marvel's history with ROM, GI Joe, Micronauts, Transformers, Shogun Warriors, Godzilla, etc. they wouldn't want to get into that unless they flat-out had full ownership of the property.

Well the original movie is a Disney Movie, but Dave Stevens found the whole experience unpleasant, so he refused to let anyone else touch the property while he was alive. However he passed away a few years ago and his estate had been happy to let other people adapt the Rocketeer, hence the new comics. So I assume Disney wouldn't have any trouble negotiating the rights.

It can be both--a few subtle nods to the original for fans (like me) but nothing more specific than the rocket pack dates back to the late 30s. I agree it should not be a full-blown sequel (much as I'd love any excuse to have Jennifer Connelly on screen) but, given the time gap and the one-shot nature of the original, a few nods can safely and easily be put into the movie without forcing people to see the first one to understand the second one. It's not rocket science (pun intended ).

Not strictly sequel-related, at least not to this sequel, but it appears that Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg once pitched a Rocketeer sequel which would've been alt-history, in a World War 2 that wasn't going very well for the good guys. As I opined back in '12:

I'd like to see a WW movie start off in an alternate/even worse WW2, where the Nazis have conquered all of Western Europe (and maybe are still allied with the Soviets?). Along the lines of CA: TFA, but with a grittier, more Raiders or even Temple of Doom (the non-"funny" bits, mind) feel. CA: TFA is good and all, but it's so darn shiny.​
