"The River" Supernatural thriller series on ABC -Feb.2012

The X-Files wasn't an anthology, I assume you mean The Twilight Zone? It's not going to be like that either - they stick with one setting and cast per year, a la American Horror Story. But it's not going to be like that, either, not with those ratings. This will be the only season it gets.

Sorry, I misused the word "anthology." I meant it's going to be a "mystery/monster of the week" type of show with an on-going story arc (similar to the X-Files UFO plot).

No ghosts this week, just some stereotypically strange natives.

Sucked to be that Peace Corpse...er... Corps guy.

Idealistic American Girl: "Did you say something?"

German Jerk: "I was just praying."

Idealistic American Girl: "Oh, it sounded like you were asking someone on the radio for an extraction."

Camera Guy: "Oh, bloody hell, getting the blindness cure involves my fear that I mentioned at the beginning of the episode!"

I still like it. Feels like I'm watching a mini-movie each week. Though the shaky-cam is still hard to watch.

It's still distracting constantly thinking about "where is the camera now" and "this all must have happened a while ago because someone has viewed and stitched together all the footage, even subtitling some of it." (But not all of it - why?)

That latter point is more of a problem than being distracted by cameras in trees or flying around. For the most part, the conceit of fiction is that it's happening NOW. If it's being done in flashback, there needs to be a good reason for it, to compensate for the reduction in dramatic punchiness.

By having this all be "found footage," that conceit is ruined. It's all in the past, everyone is probably dead, so what does it really matter what happens? This show would have been better if they'd just played it straight.

The found-footage stuff might work if more effort were made to make it seem like it might be real - such as not casting well-known actors like Paul Blackthorne and Leslie Hope in roles, whose presence is constant reminder that this is a scripted drama like any other. They should have either gone more seriously for the idea of making a fake reality show (like Ghost Hunters, but scripted, well more scripted ;)) or just dropped the found-footage conceit altogether.

Other than that, I liked this episode - having the characters going blind is a reasonably fresh idea that hasn't been done to death.

Another big drop in the ratings, no surprise, it was obvious last week that this show hasn't caught on. There are only a handful of episodes so hopefully ABC will show them all.

In Week 2, thriller The River (1.7/4) was down 29% from its premiere last Tuesday.

Well I shouldn't be surprised at the lack of chatter about this show, given the ratings.

New drama The River (1.7/4) appears to have found a (low) bottom, even with last Tuesday.

But eh, I'm finding it amusing. It doesn't need to get another season, I'll be happy with the few episodes they've got in the can.

As long as they show them all and conclude the story, I agree.

The show isn't that bad actually, I found it quite different and somewhat different/refreshing.

It's been mildly watchable, if only to see the latina get spooked out every week and deliver valuable plot information to the gringos. How does she know all this? Who cares?

Cameras really can steal souls...wow...who wrote this crap? I mean, what an intriguing storyline. :)

Good episode. This really is a fun series, too bad the ratings suck. Three more eps to go...

That little coda at the end scared me - I thought Lee Tergesen had died! (Making the show? Did he get eaten by a boa constrictor?) Then I remembered the actor's name...:rommie:

Zoinkeys! Zombies! (Who don't eat food, only people.)

Finding the girl just to kill her later. Meh...she didn't even offer much exposition. Be a bitch to her, even though she took off because her collegue was skinned alive by some forest demon...Emmett was the nutty one for going on instead of going back.

The mystery dog.

One episode left (probably period...almost a shame...but not sure this isn't better as a limited series.)

It's a fun, goofy show but I don't mind that it's going to be cancelled. It's really not very good at all.

It's hard to watch the ham-handed zombie nonsense here after watching the much better zombie show that airs on AMC on Sunday night. Having zombies just run around and everyone waving their arms and screaming like idiots just doesn't cut it anymore, does it?

And finish!

Looks like they are stuck on the River forever.

The possession thing got old fast.

Jahel's mom went crazy.

The cameraman is gay.

Hanging camera boy is dead.

Why the girl had the birthmark...we may never know.

We are supposed to think Clark the producer is the jerk, but really, he got financing for the whole damn quest. And so what if he banged Emmet's wife he was seperated from.

At least they don't have to explain the deaths of 5+ people (and that's the expedition folks, never mind the colony of zombies.)

I think the show ended on an upswing. The past few episodes have been a lot better than expected. Even if by some miracle it were to be renewed, they would have to do some major changes to keep it going. Nonetheless, the final episode brought about adequate closure while leaving some mysteries up in the air.

I thought the previous ep was better than this one (though I really enjoyed the show overall). I almost would have rather it ended on the previous ep. This one felt like filler. And what happened to the dog they left behind? I kind of figured it was going to still follow them and turn up again.

Netflix, already in talks with 20th Century Fox TV about possibly picking up recently cancelled Fox series Terra Nova, may also be eying another freshman drama that is facing cancellation, ABC’s The River. I’ve learned that the streaming giant has had conversations with The River producer ABC Studios about the possibility of continuing the thriller/horror series on Netflix. Sources stress that the talks are exploratory at this point in the context of a larger conversation between ABC Studios and Netflix.

I thought the final episode was pretty idiotic and I felt sorry for the actors (particularly the guy playing Lincoln, forced to channel Linda Blair, complete with monster voice) and I'm perfectly happy if the show is over for good...

I saw that article about Netflix thinking about picking up The River. Good God, it's even worse than Terra Nova! :rommie:

Netflix is really not doing itself any favors if it becomes the place where bad broadcast crap gets revived. They had the right idea with Arrested Development, but now they're digging around the bottom of the barrel. They should be more careful about their brand image now that they've embarked on changing their business to become a cable competitor. How can you say you're going toe to toe with HBO with a lineup of broadcast rejects?

At least they don't have to explain the deaths of 5+ people (and that's the expedition folks, never mind the colony of zombies.)
Or try to explain why Lincoln shouldn't be prosecuted for the murder of Hanging Guy (poor guy, what was his name anyway?) which they got on camera. I'm not sure a defense of "demonic possession" is going to hold up in court. Which reminds me: obviously somebody eventually got out alive, otherwise how did all the camera footage get spliced together and subtitled so nicely?
