The rip off prices at conventions =[

Pffft. You couldn't pool at her feet - I'd already be there, hogging up all the space! You'd have to settle for pooling about five feet away. :)

Dear, dear froot... I don't think you know exactly how far I'm willing to go to do said pooling. I'm pretty sure you don't want to know.

;)

My friends predicted I would turn into a "bucket of goo" if I ever met Mulgrew... and I think I did when I got up to ask my question at a con in 2001. And I was a good 30 feet away from her at the time!

As for "why" we fan-atics do it... I guess I would say "why not?"

Why spend 2000 dollars to see the superbowl in person, when you know the best seat is in your house in front of the 50 inch plasma tv you just bought for less money.

Why spend 300 dollars to go to a Streisand concert, when you can hear it better through your stereo speakers than through the stadium speakers, and you don't have to wait with 25000 others for a chance to use the bathroom?

We all have different things that make us go "ohhh". For fans... its anything to do with a sport/show/celebrity. That's why we're willing to spend money to do it.

Now for me there is a limit. I didn't spend 300 on Streisand, I spent 150. For Star Trek I'll spend 70 on Leonard, but not a hundred on Jeri. But that's just me and my tightwad fanaticism.

I'm so bummed Kate wont be there this year. I am going this year for a test run so I will know the ends and outs, cuz when Kate comes back it's on like Donkey Kong she’s gonna need rain boots.

I am however going to see her on stage in CT as Cleopatra… as long as I can keep a solid form ;)

I was fortunate to see her there when she opened "Tea at Five". I like the intimacy of the theater, and the restaurant next door thats a converted firestation.

I'd like to go to a convention but if I met Kate Mulgrew I'm not sure I'd be able to form sentences. I'd want to wear Starfleet uniform to be extra nerdy (but I don't have one).

i've been to many conventions before, never a star trek one, but events such as Collectormania I have and its expensive hobby to want an auto from a celeb, unless you catch them when they are on stage, otherwise £15 for a 10x8 that can be personalised by them. Leonard Nimoy when he was at Collectormania last year was £25 quid, but worth it since he may never come over again to this event

Ha, this thread has grown significantly since i last checked it.

Yeah, some of you have made some really good points about why we spend this sort of money on autographs/meet n greets.

I dont regret paying my £15 to meet Tim Russ (my DP), but everyone keeps saying how cheap that is, im kinda starting to regret not getting autogrpahs from the likes of Mulgrew, Duncan Mcneil, O'Reily etc etc

Still... if i had got autographs from everyone i wanted to meet that day id of been spending around £100 ($150+), which is absurd which ever way you cut it.

I didnt see any point in going on the saturday to meet patrick since hes the chancellor of my university and he's going to be presenting me with my degree in person, in a couple of years time ;-) I got to see him turn on the xmas lights in my town last christmas too, he made lots of star trek jokes, and walked on stage to the TNG theme. What a legend.

Lucky you! :)

The TNG theme came on my iPod the very moment I read this post.

To the OP - agree about "organised fandom" - they are largely money grabbing exercises these days. I recall the early "conventions" where meeting a star actually meant meeting them (even if for a short time) without making you go bankrupt. I have no problem with organisers etc recovering costs and returning a reasonable profit, but these days fans are receiving less and less for more and more money.

That's why I go to real conventions like this one:Polaris 24-and you should start going to ones like it too.

I was just notified by Creation that at a "comic" con near Chicago (by O'Hare) in late August will have Wm. Shatner and Sir Patrick (Stewart, of course) appearing on the same day (plus Linda Hamilton, lol). The cost for a "reserved" seat will be $85 (pix extra, of course). I'm tempted to buy such a ticket even if it seems kind of pricey (for me). I guess if I am fairly willing to pony up $70 just to see Leonard N. later this yr. I can shell out a little more for two Trek stars. And since I haven't been to a con since 2001, guess am due for a little Trek splurge :), GS. PS, a few months ago I spent $40 for a gallery seat (way up high) ticket to see Sir Patrick appearing w/ the Chgo. Symphony, so this is a bit of a reprise, but I haven't seen Mr. Shatner for about 30 years, so it s/be worth it.
