The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoilers)

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

Johnny Depp would be great for the Riddler but I don't think he would do the role anyway. I think they can link Riddler and Joker together and maybe have The Riddler be so crazy because he was a victim of Joker in some sick game. I would like to see a new mob king called Penguin but thats as far as the name should go.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

this seems unlikely would certainly need to see it from someone else

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

I think the best way to distinguish the Riddler from the Joker is to dump all the green suits and question mark gags. In fact, I wouldn't mind it if the Riddler was barely seen, make him a true enigma that Batman can't pin down.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

They should bring back Ra's Al Ghul(no body) or bring in Bane IMO. The Riddlers a D-League comedy relief character.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

I've been away from the net the last few days and I'm sure my next statement, or some form of it has been said, but I'm not going into all the pages.

****
Can we have a moratorium on Batman Movie news until NOLAN himself is on board for the third!!!
****

Until such time as its known IF he is coming back ALL Batman 3 news is rumor. I mean really did the OP think the UK's Sun was getting the scoop on this?!

^ Screw talking about Batman 3...I want news on Batman 4!!

The Riddler could work out very well in a film. His current incarnation has him going straight, and working as a P.I.

Perhaps the Riddler is a former Arkham inmate, who hold on to the idea that Batman is a criminal and evil. He makes it his job, as a concerned citizen to track him down and bring him in.

No duplicity on his part, but a sincere desire to see justice done. It puts Gordon into conflict, since her personally knows Batman to be innocent of the crimes he's been accused. But publically he has to back up the Riddler's efforts.

Make the Riddler a subplot in a Batman story facing a dangerous foe, where the efforts of the Riddler complicate Batman's work.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

I've been thinking about it, and I've decided that if they can do something with Scarecrow (or just completely waste him in the first movie, the way they did) there's a way to make The Riddler work in the Nolan version of The Batman universe. In fact, I would emphasize the showman aspect of The Joker's personality that was sort of put on the back burner in TDK, and then try to get something out of that.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

I did this "Cast" about a year before the Dark Knight, so some of these wouldn't fit anymore. But, I still stick by Glover as Riddler...

And just for giggles...

^Vince Vaughn is played by the She-hulk?!?:wtf:

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

^I don't recognize all those characters and actors. It would be helpful to provide captions.

As for the Riddler, I wouldn't want to see him as a Joker-type "showman" as suggested above. No hyperactive Jim Carrey type. Keep in mind that the Riddler was originally modelled on Fred Astaire. He should be a debonair intellectual, like the B:TAS version -- a smooth, devious manipulator taking pride in his mental superiority and relishing the challenge of matching wits with the Darknight Detective. For a more realistic, Nolanesque approach, skip the costume and gimmicks and just have him be a new crime boss in town, perhaps a corporate type of crime lord in the Lionel Luthor vein (to keep with the John Glover theme), who's very smart and orchestrates clever theft and embezzlement schemes based on his skill with puzzles and games. Even "Edward Nygma" would just be a pseudonym, since it's obviously a pun on "enigma" and not a believable name.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

I had that same idea about The Riddler being involved in the search for Batman since he'd basically gone into exile at the end of the last movie. I imagined The Riddler trying to feed the flames of the citizens thinking of Batman as a fugitive menace, so that The Riddler comes across as a hero (perhaps a detective) trying to bring him down. Then maybe The Riddler's true colours are revealed and once it's clear that his motives are not as noble as they seemed, Batman redeems himself by bringing him down.

I don't know if that plot could sustain the movie alone, so like the last two movies, some other villains might be brought in, as long as they don't overcrowd it (for example, I didn't think "Batman Begins" was too crowded with villains, even though they had Falcone, The Scarecrow, and Ra's Al Ghul all at the same time).

But the only Batman villain I can think of that could be remotely plausible in Nolan's world in the next one (other than The Riddler) is Bane, and even he's rather preposterous with his venom. I think people like The Penguin, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and even Catwoman are just too wacky for Nolan's world. I can't see Nolan even allowing people to call someone "The Riddler" in his movie - it just doesn't work as a believable alias that can be taken seriously like The Joker. I bet if he's in the movie at all, people would just be calling him "Nygma", much like The Scarecrow was always called "Crane".

I guess there has to be a love interest (studio pressure) or at least a major female character, so I'm curious how they could reconcile that without using Catwoman. I wonder if Talia can be brought in for that and maybe tie that back to the first one because of her connection to Ra's Al Ghul.

Well, remember how Harvey was handled in the movie? There was only one reference to him being called "Harvey Two-Face" as a derogatory nickname, and he never actually used or was described by that name in the film as a whole. In my proposed version of Edward Nygma, say, he could be nicknamed "The Riddler" among his criminal or business colleagues because of his fondness for puzzles and riddles, but it wouldn't be his actual nom de guerre or anything. Similarly, you could do Oswald Cobblepot as a crime boss who's referred to derogatorily by his rivals or henchmen as "the Penguin" because of his appearance and his fondness for tuxedoes (which are often nicknamed "penguin suits"). Penguin would be easy to do realistically; the only real change you'd have to make is to abandon the umbrella gadgets and the avian-themed vehicles and hideouts. He's basically just a short, big-nosed guy in fancy dress.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

I think you can keep the essence of the character and still make them the gritty, Nolan-esque version. That's exactly what he did with all three previous villains - Ra's al Ghul, the Scarecrow and the Joker can all be extremely 4-color, but he distilled their story and made them plausible in this setting.

That being said, the Riddler isn't the way to go. Nolan just did that with the Joker to a large extent.

With Rachel gone I think the logical character would be Catwoman. She's probably the biggest name of the rest of the Batman mythos too.

At some point I think Nolan will work in some of the lesser characters like he did with Scarecrow. The Penguin as an underworld fixer works perfectly in this setting. He could be a drop in part of the plot, but isn't really sufficient to run a story equal to the two previous bad guys.

And of course we'll see the police vs Batman, as that's pretty much mandatory considering the end of the last movie. There were some great stories there in the past.

Anyone can work with the proper retooling, and it doesn't have to be that drastic either. Names and costumes can even be kept if they're done right. Neither the hero or any of the villains so far have been out of costume or significantly altered. They even managed to work in Two-Face's comic book face as well as his half and half suit.

I continue to be puzzled by the assumption that the Riddler is the same kind of character as the Joker. Maybe if you're going by the versions from the Adam West series or '70s TV cartoons or Batman Forever, I can see that (personally I think Jim Carrey would've made a far better Joker than Nicholson). But in the comics, the Riddler is a very different character from the Joker. The Joker is a flamboyant homicidal madman whose crimes are based on anarchy and sick humor. The Riddler is a debonair, intellectual thief with a compulsive fixation on riddles and puzzles. The Joker sees life as one big, nihilistic joke, while the Riddler sees life as one big mental challenge. The Joker is a mad genius, but to him, intellect is incidental, merely a means to the end of creating comedy. The Riddler, conversely, is all about proving himself more clever than Batman or the police; he doesn't care if anyone laughs.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

Poison Ivy and Catwoman aren't that wacky. Poison Ivy could just be a florist or botanist who is either an eco-terrorist or a serial killer who makes her own poisons. Catwoman is a thief. It's that simple.

Re: The Riddler for the next Batman movie is cast and it's.... (spoil

^Right. You wouldn't need to use the costumes or nicknames, aside from subtle name checks. For instance, just have a thief named Selina Kyle, show that she loves cats, and have references to her being a skilled catburglar. Maybe have some person who's aware of her love of cats refer to her at some point as "that cat woman."
