The Return of MSPaint...

Wow... a long time since I check in on this... great work!

Thanks! I'm really surprised how well it all turned out, actually. Most of the design was made from scratch, with very little revision, though I suspect a lot of the design elements were lurking in my subconscious for years. The ones that weren't inspired by past ship classes, that is.

Assuming she doesn't have much luck in the STO contest (and that's likely, statistically speaking), I'll post the full, completed multiview with specs that I originally designed for submission. Thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and encouragement, everyone! Couldn't have done it without ya.

Good news, everyone!

I've found someone to turn this beastie into a 3D model! He won't be doing the texturing (and honestly, I can't blame him...it's a helluva lot more work), but nevertheless...Legacy is finally going to see the light of day in 3D!

Oh, and I never posted the full orthographic layout here, as I promised. Solution:

More updates to come, potentially very soon.

This is the first time I've seen this design. It's very cool. There are many things I love about it. Not the least being this has one of the most unique styles of blending the primary and secondary hulls. Really excellent work.

Good news indeed. I like your design, and I find it a shame that she wasn't among the top 25 designs chosen. The only reasons that I didn't want her to be the next Enterprise was because of the class name you chose (as far as I'm concerned, there is only enough room for one Legacy class, and that is Galen's Legacy.), and I also am not a fan of the shortened nacelles. I don't mind as much though if she is just her own thing.

I found a few Legacies on Shipschematics.net.

Sending Galen an eMail now.

I'm sorry...not quite following what both of you are trying to suggest. No individual has any more right to a ship name or ship class name than any other individual. I'm not trying to pass off this guy's design as my own, nor am I trying to say my design fills his design's shoes. I've been calling this design "Legacy" since before it was a simple sketch on paper when I was in college, years ago. So please explain exactly what you're trying to express, if you don't mind, before you start hijacking this thread.

I was expressing sarcasm, personally.

Okay. I wish that sarcasm translated through simple text, but it doesn't. Which is why internet forums are so emotionally charged all the time...simple misunderstandings. For what it's worth, I appreciate the sarcasm (now that I recognize it for what it is). ;)

This is simply amazing! The fact it's done in MSPaint even more so...

If you're looking for a 2D program to replace MSPaint look at Paint.Net. It actually started out as a hack to MSP and then evolved way beyond.

Thanks! To be fair, the glow effects on the bussard collectors, warp engine field grills, and impulse engines were all done in my old version of After Effects 5.5 Pro. The deflector, however, was done mostly in Paint.

Thanks, Ziz...I'll have to check that out. A lot of people keep telling me I need to change over to a new program, and they're probably right. Believe it or not, I stay with MSPaint because I'm familiar with it as a tool, and I can use it to take design elements very quickly from concept to realization.

Though it would be nice to have a few extra tricks up my sleeve.

I have to completely agree with this. Paint.Net is an excellent little free 2-D paint program. It's capabilities far surpass anything put out by MS. I run a graphic design business and still make use of this program as a supplement to PhotoShop, PrintShop, etc. because it does a nice job with effects quickly and easily.

If you do download it, be sure to check out the Help and Forums section in the menu bar. You'll find some great tips and techniques from other users.

On a slightly separate topic, I'm working on a new ship concept (I know...haven't finished Zaragoza yet...sue me). Still working out the details, and I'm not happy with the lateral view. Trying to get her knocked out in my head in three dimensions.

Definite Dominion influence, here.

For the moment, I'm envisioning it as an early 25th-century scout class. Small, agile, and very, very fast. Not a bruiser, like Defiant. Quick and deadly, but something that's better suited to strike-and-fade tactics than a stand-up fight.

Yeah, definitely lurk the forums. There's all kinds of free plug-ins to make it do other things the developers didn't put in, or do them better.

Also, the layout and interface is very similar to MSP so it's a very easy transition.
